Krystal's POV

"NO, STOP, GET AWAY!" Jieun screamed, thrashing against my grip as the muscles in my arms shook from exertion.

"It's Lay! He's trained, he can help!" I gasped as her elbow nailed me hard in the stomach, leaving me seeing black spots. Her struggling was so intense that I was nearly flung off, but I hung on despite feeling like I had just drunk spoiled milk.

Her resistance eventually died down, and I felt her body shaking underneath me as she dissolved into tears.

Jungkook apparently had passed out, and Lay was straightening him so that his airway was clear. Jieun had completely stopped making any sound, and I let her up, wincing guiltily at the sight of her tear-smudged face.

As soon as the ambulances arrived, Jungkook was rushed to the hospital. Lay went with him, the doors of the ambulance slammed shut behind him as the vehicle peeled around the corner with sirens blaring.

Nothing was said for a few moments, and I didn't even have time to sense anything wrong with her until she swayed slightly in my grasp, then collapsed like a puppet who's strings had been severed abruptly.

I caught her with a grunt, surprised by her sudden fall. Paramedics from a lingering ambulance ran over with a stretcher and gently transferred Jieun onto it. I hopped onto the ambulance and squeezed into the corner so as not to be in the way.

We arrived in the hospital in a flurry of people and  noise. Since Jieun had been stabilized during the ride to the hospital, she was transferred to a room with several other unoccupied beds. Her breathing was still slightly shallow, and her coloring resembled one of a corpse's. I grasped one of her hands and sat by the bed, feeling worried and useless.

Some time later, after I had fallen asleep in the chair by her bed, I was woken by an exhausted looking Lay tapping me on the shoulder to offer a steaming cup of water.

Taking it gratefully, I sipped tentatively as he went around the other side of the bed to check on Jieun.

"How's Jungkook?" I asked, turning my half empty cup around and around in my hands.

His silence caused a surge of panic to crash over me.

"He's not...?"

"No, but he's in critical condition. He'll be going through the main part of surgery any time now, due to his collapsed lung and bruised organs." he paused, running his hand over Jieun's head. "He may not make it."

I sat frozen on my seat, trying to imagine what it would do to Jieun if he died.

Another doctor came in, looking like he had lost a fight with a pillow with his hair sticking up at crazy angles.

"We need you in the operating room." he said, red in the face and panting excessively.

Lay's expression turned even stormier, and he rushed out of the room so fast I didn't have time to respond.

"What happened?" I asked bluntly, standing up to face the newcomer.

He had finally caught his breath, and he straightened his coat.

"I'm only an assistant, and I can't provide you with full details."

I gritted my teeth and nearly growled aloud. "So you don't know anything?"

From there on, he looked more than a little pissed.

Whoops.

"I need to go back to the operating room." he said, the circles under his eyes giving him a menacing look. He turned on his heel and exited before I could wrestle him and put him in a headlock. Maybe if I did that, he would tell me everything.

A soft cough came from behind me, and I turned to see Jieun opening her eyes and struggling to sit up.

"Jungkook." she rasped, looking at me in demand for an answer.

"I-I don't know." I said, the lie stinging as it left my lips.

She propped herself up and tried to swing her legs onto the floor. I went beside her and propped her up, frowning at how light she was.

"I need to go find him." she said desperately, clinging into me for support.

"The best thing you can do for him is rest." I told her sternly, guiding her back onto the bed. She shook her head furiously, and struggled in the direction of the door.

"Yah, Jieun-ah. If you kill yourself now, you won't be able to see Jungkook." She stopped stone cold at the sound of his name.

"Jungkook is fine, right?" She asked, staring up at me with wide eyes as she obediently sat down on her bed. "I'll be able to see him soon, right?"

"Yes," I replied, feeling my heart crack at her wholeheartedly placed trust in me. "You'll be able to see him soon."

Assistant's POV

"Scapel."

It was a lot worse than it looked. There was only bruising that was visible before, but once we had cut him open, there was significant damage to a few of his major organs, most likely from the massive impact.

As the head doctors worked on the patient, I watched the monitor that showed his heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and lots of other data.

"Clamp."

Another assistant handed the smaller sized clamp to a doctor. I took in a breath as I heard this. This stage in the surgery was critical. If he missed-

"Oxygen! We need a blood transfusion." Something crashed to the floor. "Dr. Park, stop the bleeding and stitch the patient up." a voice ordered as people started rushing around. "We cannot have the patient exposed for much longer."

My eyes widened in horror at the drastically decreasing blood pressure and heart rate that accompanied the urgently beeping monitor.

Jieun's POV

It's been a while, and something felt very wrong. There was an unsettling feeling that was squeezing a vice-like clamp around my chest. Every time I breathed in I felt like I wasn't getting enough air, and my stomach felt like I had swallowed a rock that became heavier by the second.

But Krystal said that I would be able to see Jungkook soon, and she wouldn't sugarcoat something so important to me. I know that she wouldn't.

The door opened, and in came five of the most unexpected guests, along with Taehyung and Suzy.

"Suzy!" I cried happily, feeling much better until I remembered that things were less than good between us.

Taehyung looked at me concernedly, and I met his gaze warily. But there was no longer that edge of wistfulness or longing in his gaze. He also stood much closer to Suzy than all the other members, and my eyes widened momentarily as I caught onto that detail.

I mean, sure, I blacked out only about eleven hours ago, but that doesn't mean my brain can't function properly. All the faces of the newcomers were solemn, and Jimin was the first to speak.

"Jieun-ah," he stepped forward like would onto his execution platform. "Jungkook's surgery failed."
