Jieun's POV

For a few seconds, my brain couldn't keep up with what was happening. I only realized something wasn't right when Lay had Taehyung in a choke hold.

"Whoa!" I lurched forward. "Don't hurt him!"

Lay stared at me over Taehyung, who was slowly turning from pink to red. "Isn't this the guy a threat?"

Taehyung spluttered in protest and scrabbled weakly at Lay's arm.

I smacked him on the head. "Does he look like a threat to you?!"

My brother loosened his arm, and Taehyung fell to the floor where he gasped and coughed, his face turning from crimson back to his usual hue.

Krystal stepped forward, not granting him any recovery time. "How did you get here, and what are you doing here?"

"I came here to tell you guys that you need to get out." he straightened, panic taking over his features now that he had regained his composure. "That limousine driver you hired? He was part of the group that this company owes the debt to."

My mother paced over looking stricken. "How do you know all this? Are you a spy? Why do you know Jieun?"

Taehyung tensed, feeling the weight of our gazes upon him. "Because...I'm a part of the group."

The silence stretched, until Lay said sarcastically, "Yah, Jieun-ah. Now can I strangle him?"

"No, you don't understand." Taehyung held up his hands defensively in front of him. "I don't have any intention to harm you. My adopted family..."

"Where's the proof?" Krystal said.

Taehyung looked around at each of us. "I don't have any proof, but you need to believe me. We're wasting time here, and we really need to go."

I furrowed my brows. "Why do we need to go? The only thing we owe is money, and I'm pretty sure-"

I was cut off by the voices getting louder from the corridor. Taehyung swore, which was as much as we could do until the doors burst open a second time. Men filed in, some palming weapons and others seemingly empty-handed.

There were many gasps, and I think I was the one that squeaked. Another figure strolled in behind the others, an air of self-importance around him.

He glided right up to my parents, ignoring the rest of us, and held up a paper that he waved offensively close to their faces.

"The company is no longer yours!" he said in a singsong voice, his face splitting into a greasy smile that reminded me of every mugger I had ever encountered.

"Kim Taehyung." my mother growled, her eyes filling with disgust.

"What?!" Krystal gasped from beside me.

Despite the fact that everything in this situation screamed 'BAD' I stepped forward. "Actually, under contract number seventy-eight that was made on the evening of June twenty-first, your company owes us money."

My statement was met with a stunned silence.

"J-Jieun-ah. You read all the contracts?" My mother said, astonished. "There were more than a hundred pages containing that information."

The man had all his attention focused on me, and I forced myself to stand a little straighter. "You have no right to be here and you are breaking several laws as of now."

He sneered, and his men shifted, weapons glinting under the bright florescent lights. "So what can you do about that?"

Taehyung's POV

I crossed my fingers behind my back that the man wouldn't notice me. My adoptive father smirked nervously at Jieun's statement. I could tell he was uneasy by the way his eyes darted to his men for signs of reassurance.

"So what can you do about that?"

Jieun stepped forward, her posture the definition of confidence. "Well, you'll find that it might be hard to stop me." Her smile made me glad I wasn't her enemy. "The police will be here very soon."

The person who shared my name staggered back like he had been punched. But after looking behind him and realizing he outnumbered us three to one, he brushed off his suit and motioned with a flick of his wrist.

Only I knew what that meant.

"DUCK!" I screamed, ramming into the person next to me, which happened to be Jieun, who then toppled and crashed into the other two people, effectively bowling them down.

Not a moment too soon either. The gunshot echoed in the wide conference room, and the sound of shattering glass filled the air. I shoved Jieun behind a desk and dragged Lay and Krystal, who were dazed, down beside her.

Jieun's eyes widened. "My parents!"

"No!" I gritted my teeth, my hand with a fistful of the back of her shirt, stopping her cold in her tracks. "Are you insane?"

"If it means my parents don't die, then yes!" she ripped herself away from me and barreled recklessly across the open space.

Swearing more than I had ever done in my life, I shot out from our temporary cover and after Jieun, who was surprisingly fast and had already covered more than half the distance.

More shots rang out, and I forced myself not to curl up into fetal position right there and then. One of the gang members were sprinting perpendicularly to Jieun, in the perfect position to intercept her path. I put on a burst of speed, overtaking her, and tackled the guy head on.

For a few seconds, we wrestled for dominance, and he struggled to push the gun between us to fire. Exerting every ounce of my strength, I twisted his wrist and the gun clattered out of his hand. Another gunshot went off to my left, followed by a bloodcurdling scream.

Jieun's POV

"Eomma!" I cried out, lunging forward to catch her as she collapsed. Lowering her to the ground, I sobbed hysterically at the red blossoming from her lower abdomen.

"Don't worry. I'm not gonna die yet." she rasped, pressing a fist against her wound, her face contorting with pain.

A force jerked me upward by my hair, and I screamed, pummeling whoever it was.

"She'll sign the check, wether she likes it or not." a voice snarled in my ear. "And you'll help me with it."

I growled, my vision tinged red with anger. My elbow was sent back with as much strength possible, and I was rewarded with a pained grunt.

There were yells and shouts, but the only thing I focused on was my mother, who's breathing was getting more rapid by the second. Police filed into the room, restraining the gang members.

My plan had worked.
