Chapter 13 - The Ball and all its trimmings.
At seven o clock sharp, the girls were all waiting at the top of the double staircase that led to the transformed dining Hall.
The Grand Hall was entered by two sweeping staircases made from a rich, deep mahogany wood with a perfect grain; the stairs themselves covered in an opulent red carpet for the night--clichèd, but incredibly effective.
The idea of the twin staircases was that, once the male angel was announced, his partner would descend her staircase and they would meet on a marble plinth in the middle for photographs. They then further descended into the Hall and waited at the bottom to watch their friends join the Ball.
Whoever had decorated the Hall had done a more than outstanding job; swathes of gold gossamer material entwined with silver tinsel and twinkly fairy lights, creating the effect of a million tiny stars, all glistening and making the crystal chandeliers glint their shine onto every surface.
Nathan was the first of the group to be announced, which was almost a relief, in a nice kind of way, for the rest of them because Casey was so hyper. Dressed in a stunning red dress that set off her shiny chestnut hair, it appeared as if she was glowing with excitement all over. As she swept slowly down the staircase in her flowing silk ball gown, Nathan grinned widely at her; his cravat turning to the same cranberry red colour of Caseys' dress.
They joined together and with tears in her eyes, they watched their friends descend the stairs; Kirsty in her velvet black dress, Laura in a simple, yet sophisticated satin dress in a pale coral, which suited her so perfectly that the whole room stopped and stared at her beauty. Jake felt the luckiest in the room, as he met up with her and took her arm in his, and whispered softly in her ear just how beautiful she looked.
Angel and Tash had gone for cocktail dresses, stopping at the knee, yet still beautiful enough for the ball; Angel in midnight blue and Tash in a deep cherry red.
Harry met with Angel and Finn with Tash; again both of them stunned by their girlfriends sheer beauty and etheral glow.
The group gelled well together; it was as if they had been friends for years and for all of them, they finally felt part of something and were all incredibly happy to be such a main part of a big event.
They foung a table for the ten of them, wished their drinks onto the table and glanced at the huge stage; only eighteen months time or even sooner, they would recieve their wings on that stage. That was a scary, but awesome thought.
Suddenly, the Head Magister appeared on the stage and the entire room silenced at once; all of them squirming with anticipation.
"Good evening ladies and gentlemen," he announced in his booming, yet somehow calming voice.
"I have many tasks to carry out, so the sooner these are carried out, the quicker you can enjoy the food and dancing."
He paused for breath, eyes looking over the lecturn he had his notes resting on.
"Firstly, I will announce any first year achievements. The intake this year has been incredibly talented and some of you are already showing Level two skills in your first few weeks.
Angel 1308, Christian and Angel 1803 Kirsty, please step up to the stage."
Christian looked at Kirsty who was blushing a deep shade of red and mouthed 'Don't worry' at her as they both stood up and made their way to the stage at the front of the Hall. Christian gave Kirsty his hand and helped her onto the stage.
"Thank you the both of you. I realise that on Earth this would be an embarrassing position to put you in, but here you are amongst friends and should savour the moments like this." As he said this, he placed his arms around the two first years shoulders.
