Chapter 23-- A poisonous homecoming.

(Unedited).

The team landed lightly on their feet, in a crouching position, the aim of which being to make themselves smaller targets against enemies.

Pavo gestured to the team to stay in place as his eyes scouted the room where they had landed.

They had landed in what appeared to be the store-room of a large supermarket; multiple shelves lined the room, from floor to ceiling and stretched out as far as the eyes could see.

Christian and Nathan appeared to be gulping the air, silently bumping fists with each other, as they breathed the natural elements of the environment in; this slight movement earning them a scowl from Pavo and an angry glare from Leon.

The boys' suddenly stared at the ground, ashamed of their momentary lapse of concentration, remembering the seriousness of their mission.

Christian mouthed "Sorry mate" to Leon, who nodded his head, accepting his apology.

Pavo suddenly put his hand in the air, palm facing toward them, then after a few seconds pause, beckoned them into a huddle around him.

"I can sense Deus' essence becoming stronger--he is on his way and will be grounding just about six rows up, on the left hand side.

Follow me over there slowly, in pairs. Nathan and Leon, take the far left side and hide behind the crates of fresh fruit. Adriano and Christian, take the right-hand position, over by the tinned goods."

Both teams nodded and followed behind Pavo, their cowhide boots barely making a sound as they walked heel-to-toe, over to their positions.

Pavo meanwhile, took a huge leap vertically, clearing the many shelves and perched on the empty pallet above their heads, affording him a great vantage position to grab Naomi. He dearly hoped that Leon would not blow his cover too soon upon seeing Naomi; none of them had ever seen, with the exception of Adriano, what devastation a visit from a Darksider could do to an angel.

The first years especially were in for a big shock potentially and there was no telling what they had done emotionally and mentally to her.

Pavo suddenly put his finger to his lips, looking at the ground crew, who all remained still and silent. Nathan could hear his heart beating so loudly, he was certain that the entire basement must be able to hear it too.

With a sudden smell of sulphur, a flicker of the overhead florescent lights and the air becoming cloying in their lungs, Deus appeared, with what appeared to be a rag-doll by his side.

Naomi had lost an immense amount of weight, her eyes no longer sparkled, nor did her hair have any sheen.

Her skin had that sallow look of one that hadn't seen the light for a long time and although she was clean and neatly presented, it was clear that she was not overimpressed with her new life--such was her demeanour, that she didn't even notice the lightsiders gathered close.

Deus, on the other hand, looked first to his left and then to his right; faking a large yawn, he beckoned the angels out of their hiding place.

With a nod from Adriano, the four of them exposed their hiding places from the shadows-Nathan and Christian looking spellbound at Deus, having never seen a darksider before, whilst Leon strode straight in front of Deus and spat at his feet.

"How dare you, you total and utter scum," he yelled at him, inches away from his face.

"If you've hurt her in anyway at all, I swear I will kill you with my bare hands!" he added, shaking with rage and both fists squeezed so tightly shut, that his nails were causing tiny cuts in his palms.
