We used to be the life of the party
We used to be the ones that the ones that they wished they were

I took deep breaths as I slowly turned the key in my ignition to put the engine to rest. Everything fell silent. Except for the pounding my heart was doing inside my chest.

"Okay, Chelsie. You know Giancarlo is going to be at the party. Just avoid him. Don't talk to him. Don't make eye contact with him. Just relax and have a good time" I say giving myself a quick pep talk before I finally stepped out of the car.

With each clicking sound my heels made, the more my nerves grew. It wasn't like Giancarlo and I ended on bad terms, it was just I thought this would be us tonight. Celebrating our future wedding with all of our friends and family in the wake of our engagement. But as much as I loved Giancarlo, our schedules were too difficult.

I was greeted at the door by the future bride, Megan, and welcomed into the house. "Congratulations!" I pull the newly engaged woman in for a hug.

"Awww, thank you Chels," she says in a cheerful voice. But her tone quickly turns serious. "Just letting you know Giancarlo is in the kitchen,"

I gulped. Even hearing his name made my stomach flutter with butterflies. He was still apart of me, as much as I needed him not to be.

Megan and I were suddenly interrupted by he clinking of glasses as the best man took the stage. The tanned, toned, and familiar man took center stage with a microphone in hand.

He softly cleared his theist and made sure he had everyone's attention before beginning his speech. He half-laughed into the microphone and finally opened his mouth. "I've known Dee since his rookie season in the league. And I've never seen him happier than he is then when he is with Megan. I've never heard anyone gush about their loved ones as much as this man does. It's admirable. It's true love." His eyes meet mine now and we both freeze, as if we are thrown back in time, to when this was us. "That love is hard to come by. But once you find it, you just know that that person will be with you for the rest of your life." He says still locking eyes with me. Giancarlo raises his glass. "To Megan and Dee, and a lifetime of happiness." Everyone lets out a simultaneous "cheers" except for me.

I was flustered with emotion and confusion. Was he reflecting on our past relationship, or was he specifically talking about Megan and Dee? I flew the crowded room and find my way to the back balcony.

I find a seat on the swing and I can faintly hear the sounds of waves crashing against the shore. My mind trails off to past memories that almost hurt to look back on. Fond memories of watching Giancarlo play and just relaxing with him on an off day all seem like a lifetime ago.

"Is this seat taken?" A sweet Spanish voice asks me. I'm shaken from my reminiscing and quickly look up to see the Marlins outfielder holding two glasses of champagne. My heart is beating like a drum.

"No, please sit down"

He takes his spot next to me and politely hands me a glass of champagne. "How have you been?" He asks before taking a small sip of his drink.

"I've been okay. Until tonight," I admit. I though about lying and telling him I was doing great, but I'm such a bad liar.

"I know what you mean, Chelsie. It took a lot for the both of us to come here tonight. I think everyone here thought that this would be us first."

I nodded in agreement. "I miss you Gian."

"I miss you so much, Chelsie. You are like a missing piece of me. I'm not complete without you next to me. You light me up like a million fireflies. I need you," he nearly begged. Tears suddenly formed in my eyes as all of the reasons we even broke up in the first place wash away. They didn't matter anymore.

"What are you saying?" I managed to stutter.

"I'm saying, if you will have me, I want to give us another chance. What do you say?" He looked up with nervous eyes.

A sudden warmth filled my body. I had imagined this happening in my head but never thought that it would actually happen tonight.

"I say that a love like ours is worth a million chances."

A smile quickly formed on the both of our faces as my answer escaped my lips. Giancarlo's face inched closer to mine, until finally our lips met for the first time in what seemed like forever.

The spark was obvious and as our lips drifted apart, I yearned for more. Giancarlo just smiled.

"Chels, I could never give up on us. You are my everything."
