because how i see it is that they were bbfs who had the possibility of falling in love with each other. snape fell first, then he grew tired of waiting and turned to his other 'love' the dark arts.
i swear at one point even jk said that "If Snape had given up on dark arts then maybe lily would have fallen for him too"
but instead in the time that snape was being a winy little kid, james proved to lily how he matured and therefore earned her love in response.
like i literally see no reason for people to ship snily (other than him being overly obsessed with her which is extremely unhealthy yet alone creepy)
