When I wake up I'm back in the bed I last woke up in. I rub my eyes and try to sit up. Cold hands push me back down. "What?" I ask. I look beside me and see Jack.

"Hey," he says smiling. "Feeling okay?" I nod.

"What happened?" I asked.

"You jumped in front of me and attacked Pitch."

Suddenly I remembered. "What happened to Pitch?"

He sighed. "You stopped him. He got away though." He touched my cheek. "It almost killed you. Please don't do anything like that again."

"Jack- how long have I been here? I'm going to get in so much trouble!"

He looks at me and frowns. "I'm sorry," he says. "This is my fault."

I sigh. "Yes it is." He laughs and sticks his tongue out at me. Then he picks me up and carries flies out the window.

**two hours later**

I'm grounded, unsurprisingly. One month of no reading or going outside.

No surprise there. We weren't even gone a full day, somehow.

It doesn't matter. My mom doesn't know that my best friend will be staying with me.

Jack has to leave early because we've been getting all the snow the past two days. He hugs me before he goes and kisses my forehead. I stand there in a daze for 20 minutes before finally going to bed.

I have school in the morning, but no panic attacks.
