The Diary and Safekeeping of Abigail Jefferson

April 3rd, 1782
Abigail Jefferson was born on April 3rd, 1782.

December 15th, 1787
Abigail is past five, learning how to read and write as a young woman. Even if it does not follow typical stereotypes. I, Thomas Jefferson, Abigail's father insist on the fact she know how to read text, and write arguments.

I am now nine years old today! Daddy has been keeping very minimal information on me in this book, for a few past years. But now he believes I am old enough to write in it myself. And yes he is right! I am fluent in French, and Latin. I can even write in both languages.

Bonjour mon nom est Abigail Jefferson!

Salve mi nomen Abigail Jefferson!

Daddy is very proud of me. He is such a good father, he spends all day with me after work. Helps me with my studies, and compliments me daily.

I love you father.

A lot has changed since I last wrote in here. Father changed a lot. He enslaved more slaves and is more distant when he isn't at work. I barely see him any more, forcing me to continue learning with one of his slaves rather than him.

Although I remember when he complimented me, just those few short moths ago. And I know I am very bright for my age. Therefore, I know his stress is caused by the name he keeps muttering around the house.

"Hamilton."

I was informed to keep updating my age. I am now 12 years old. Father has not changed, if anything our slave count has doubled. I hate the fact that all of our slaves, don't like it here, and want to leave. It should not be this way, they should leave if they wish.

Dad hit me for the first time today, I could tell he regretted it immediately. But it still hurt me, physically and emotionally.

All I was doing is help some of my friends escape. I refuse to call them slaves anymore, they are all my friends.

Only two of my friends escaped before I was caught. I wish them well.

Je suis tellement désolé père, s'il vous plaît aider mes amis.

Father deeply apologized for the events yesterday, and as a bigger apology, he allowed me to come with him for dinner at the Hamilton's. I'm aware the dinner was for work purposes, and that he only brought me because he had to, but I had so much fun.
