Today is the day. The day I I have dinner with my mom and her boyfriend. I hadn't invited Ethan yet, so I have to do that today. I grabbed my phone and shot him a text.

Eliza: Hey E. I have a huge favor to ask!

Ethan: What is it??

Eliza: Will you come over for dinner with my mom and her new boyfriend? I need backup.

Ethan: What time?

Eliza: Be over by 7pm.

Ethan: I'll be there...

---------

I got out of bed and went downstairs for breakfast. My mom was still sleeping, so I cooked her some breakfast.

She came downstairs and smiled.

"Are you making breakfast?" She asked, sounding surprised.

"Yes, Ma. I can cook, you know?" I said.

She chuckled at my statement and I rolled my eyes at her. Just then, my egg caught on fire. My mom rushed over and we put out the fire quickly.

"Wanna go out?" She asked.

"Yes please." I said.

We both laughed.

---------

Later that day, I got ready for dinner.

It was 6:50pm and I heard a knock at the door. It must be Ethan. I ran downstairs to get the door. My mom was still getting ready in her room.

I opened the door and it wasn't Ethan. It was an attractive, tall, dark skinned man with green eyes. He was definitely younger than my mom.

"Uh, hi." He said. "I'm Rob. You must be Eliza?" He asked, smiling.

"Uh, yeah. Nice to meet you." I said, not smiling at all.

My mom came down the stairs.

"Oh hi there!" She said, her eyes lighting up when she saw Rob.

"I see you two have already met." She said.

"Mom, can I see you in the kitchen, alone?" I asked.

"Sure. Rob, you can take a seat in the living room if you'd like." She said.

We went to the kitchen.

"So, how do you like him so far?" She asked.

"He's young." I said.

"Sure he's a little younger than me, but he really cares about me." She said.

"I don't know Mom. Something doesn't seem right." I said.

"Look honey, I know this is hard for you, me moving on from your dad, but-" she said.

"I just don't want another man hurting you." I said, interrupting her.

She hugged me.

"Just give him a chance." She said.

"Fine." I said, hugging her back.

We walked outside the kitchen and saw Rob talking to Ethan.

"Ethan." I said.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Hello, Ethan. How are you sweetie?" My mom asked, smiling at him.

"I'm good, thanks for asking. How are you?" Ethan asked.

"I'm fine, thank you." She replied.

I walked over to where Ethan was standing.

"So, looks like you're going to get a new step dad." He said.
