Fifteen minutes later she came back down and put the baby monitor on the coffee table. A strange wave of uncomfortable atmosphere surrounding them as it was just the two of them left now. "This is great," Glen said, nodding to the curriculum he'd put back on the table. "It is," she confirmed as she pulled her feet under her, crossing her legs.
"The best school, in my opinion, to give him a great start to his education. He gets to be in class with his best friend, he loves going to school," she informed him as she took a sip of her glass of wine.
"I thought they weren't allowed to have best friends," Glen noted, remembering the text he'd just read. "Every child has a best friend, they can't stop that," Kate explained with a shrug of her shoulders and he couldn't help but agree to that. Every child had his best friend to play and have fun with.
"How was your pregnancy?" he asked her, needing to know everything he'd missed, the good and the possible bad. He wanted to know how she'd handled her pregnancy, motherhood.
"Tough." she started with a deep sigh.
"I was alone here in London. I had a bad start with morning sickness. I was missing you and dealing what I had been told by your management and getting over the fact that you didn't want me or us." she told him as he gave her an apologetic look. "It wasn't easy," she admitted with another sigh as she rose to refill her glass of wine, but realised that he didn't drink and refilled his coke.
"I was being honest earlier," he noted as his eyes followed her to the kitchen where she refilled both of their classes. The electric fire crackling like a real fireplace and giving off heat, blanketing the room in an orange glow.
"whether you had been pregnant or not, I would have loved to have been with you. Had I known you were pregnant I would have been here, I really would have." He told her as he gazed into her eyes as she returned from the kitchen, handing him his coke. Gazing into his eyes she could see the honesty and hurt in his eyes at having missed so much. And then there was the fact that if he truly was the man she'd fallen for he would truly have been there.
"I believe you now," she told him with a reassuring smile and tone. "How was the pregnancy after the morning sickness?" he asked her, his hand itching to take hers in his or to cup her cheek and kiss her.
"Hard, I tried to hide it as long as I could. I realised that my life was never going to be how I had dreamed it of being and imagined it to be. My research, I couldn't do that with a child, I couldn't travel the world like I had intended to do after graduating." she confessed as she turned her body towards him, her elbow resting on the back of the couch.
"I thought about taking it away, but I couldn't do it," she told him in honesty. "He's the best thing that's ever happened to me." she immediately added and when she saw the flicker of anger in his eyes at the mention that she had considered taking the baby away.
"Glen my world had just turned upside down because of my pregnancy. I didn't know where the rest of life would be headed towards. You as far as I knew weren't interested and wouldn't be there to help." she told him as she was dead honest with him. She needed him to know the truth. If they were ever to have a relationship of any kind for Arthur's sake she'd have to tell him, they'd have to get through this.
"I thought about it for half a day and then I never thought about it again," she told him, he didn't really have any reason to bud in now. He hadn't been there when her life turned into chaos. He hadn't been there when she had to figure out what to do with her life next. That all her hard work at the university had been for nothing. He had no idea what it had been like to have the life you'd worked so hard for to accomplish to be ripped away right in front of you. She'd figured she'd travel the world with her doctorate in Geography. No such luck when she got pregnant.
