A little over two hours later Kate returned back home. She was on the phone and talking as Glen signalled to her to be quiet. Smiling at she nodded her head and headed to a door of the hallway which was her office. When she exited her office she walked up to them, bending over the backrest and his shoulder, her breast pressing into his shoulder as she kissed their son's head.
"Has he been good?" she asked him, smiling down at Glen as she ran her hand through her son's hair. "He's been an angel," Glen assured her, turning his attention back down to his son. "Good." she smiled, getting up. "How long has he been asleep for?" she asked him with a knowing look, hoping it hadn't been too long or she wouldn't be sleeping with him tonight.
"About an hour." He told her as she nodded her head as she sunk into the armchair. "You might want to wake him up, I won't be sleeping with him tonight otherwise," she told him as she pulled off her shoes and rubbed the sole of her right foot.
"Are you staying over for dinner?" She asked him, leaning against the backrest in a tired manner. She just wanted to enjoy the small moment they had. To watch Glen sitting on the couch with their son. But instead, her mind wandered and imagined what it would have been like. How it would have looked if Glen wasn't sitting there with their four-year-old son, but with a newborn.
Their newborn son. She would have loved to have seen that. To have shared all those moments. To have had him there when she wanted nothing more than to give up. When she wanted him to be there, to support her, to help her during those long nights. She would have loved to have seen the man she loved holding their son.
The picture they made now though would have to be enough and it was still adorable. "If I can," he asked her as she nodded her head, before rising from her seat.
Turning back to their son, he ran his hand up and down his back. "Arthur," he whispered softly as he heard Kate rummaging in the kitchen and the fridge.
"Arthur little man. It's time to wake up sweet boy." Glen told him as he ran his hand through his hair, kissing the side of his head. "Glen?" his sleepy voice asked, his eyes fluttering open softly.
"Yes." Glen chuckled softly, kissing the top of his head.
"I don't want to wake up." he protested, rubbing his cheek into Glen's chest. "Sleep." he mumbled, closing his eyes again.
"Mummy's making dinner, why don't we go and check," Glen suggested, hoping to get him awake with that. He would hate for Kate to be kept up all night by an active little boy which was their son.
He managed to wake him up as he sniffed the air and he couldn't help but chuckle. With Arthur in his arms, they headed for the kitchen where Kate had just started preparing dinner. Just the three of them were able to enjoy some time together. Both of them unknowing of the others were thinking the same things. Both Glen and Kate were imagining what it would have been like if he'd discovered about it five years ago.
If they had been allowed to be a family from the first moment on. When Kate returned from giving Arthur his bath, she held out a book to him. "He wants you to read his bedtime story," Kate noted with a sad smile on her face. Bedtime stories had always been her thing with Arthur. Sure there were times where Kate, Will, Harry or her mum and grandmother would read to him. But those moments were few. Today, however, he couldn't be swayed, he wanted Glen to read his bedtime story and not his mum. It stung her that he wanted his bedtime story to be read by someone else. But then again this would be how it would be when he found out that Glen was his dad.
