We all know the fairy tales
Where the suitors line up
Before the princess
And she challenges them
To complete a set
Of harrowing tasks
Before they can win her hand.
To gather flowers
From the field beyond
The wolves' den.
To bring her gold
From the cave
On the furthest reaches
Of her kingdom.
These tasks I have done.
But the final is the hardest.
To wait in a deep, dark room
While she decides
Whether or not
I am the one she desires.
It is agony -
For should it not be enough
That I succeeded
All previous tasks
While the others
Lay choking on the dust?
But if this is what it takes
To win the hand
Of the fairest head
To ever wear a crown,
Then I will endure anything.
