At the start of their relationship, Patton and Virgil were deep in love.

The other sides would constantly find the couple cuddled up on the couch, watching movies with a warm, fuzzy blanket pulled up to their shoulders. Virgil and Patton went out on many dates, and went nearly everywhere with each other, wanting to spend time together.

But after four months of being together, Virgil seemed to realize that things were...shifting. Every time Patton kissed him, or called him pet names, it just felt...odd. He thought something was wrong with him. Why would kissing and cuddling with your boyfriend make you feel weird? Even the term "boyfriend" felt wrong when he referred to Patton. Could it be that maybe Virgil didn't love Patton romantically anymore?

It scared Virgil, in all honesty, and it caused his anxiety to skyrocket, which obviously didn't make him feel that well most of the time.

What would Patton think about all of this? If Virgil broke up with him...it would break his heart. But despite these bad thoughts flying through his head, the last thing Virgil would want to do would be to lead Patton on and feed into Deceit with lies. He knew he had to break up with Patton, as it would be the best option here. If only it were an easy option too...

"...But I still like Patton, just platonically, not romantically!" Virgil said, throwing his hands up in the air in frustration.

"Okay, calm down, Virgil," Roman said, softly.

"I'm anxiety! I can hardly ever calm down!"

Roman sighed heavily. "Look, I understand. This happens to a lot of people. They'll feel very in love with a person for a while, then they slowly just...fall out of love with them. You can't control it, it just happens."

Virgil nodded along, silently. He fidgeted with the threads hanging off his hoodie sleeves, feeling even more nervousness bubble up inside him. He had come to Roman for advice, and they mutually agreed that Virgil had to do this today, before his anxiety got any higher and affected him even more.

Minutes later, Virgil exited the creative side's room and slowly made his way down the hallway. Roman's advice was swirling in his mind, mixing with his anxious thoughts. He was so caught up in all of this that he didn't even notice Patton turning the corner at the end of the hall just as he was.

The impact caused Virgil to slam into Patton's chest and instinctively, his boyfriend's arms went around him to keep him from falling backwards. "Hey, love!"

"O-oh. Hey, Patt!" Virgil greeted, trying to hide his stuttering. He took a step back from the moral trait, causing Patton's arms to fall from Virgil's waist.

"Virge? What's wrong?" Patton questioned, tilting his head like a confused and concerned puppy. The innocent, adorable sight caused Virgil's stomach to churn, knowing that this sight wouldn't last for so long.

"We need to talk..." the anxious trait said, hesitantly.

"Okay! What about?"

This was it. He couldn't turn back now.

"I...I love talking with you, and hanging out with you, Patt. But lately, I feel that a romantic relationship isn't really the best thing for us. But I don't...I don't want to lose you as a friend too..." A few tears streamed down Virgil's face, and he attempted to hide them with his sleeves, though it didn't work.

Patton was frozen, his mouth opened slightly, like he wanted to say something, but couldn't find the words. If Virgil had to describe how he looked in this moment, he would say Patton looked shocked and...heartbroken.

He couldn't take this anymore. Virgil suddenly turned and ran down the hall, the tears falling faster. He rushed into his room and slammed the door, locking it and flopping down on his bed. He buried his face in a pillow, crying into it.

That night, neither half of the former couple left their rooms. No matter how many times Logan and Roman knocked on their doors, or shouted to them, they never answered.

One year later

"Hey, Virge, did you remember to get the popcorn out of the microwave?" Patton asked, holding two fuzzy blankets in his arms.

Virgil walked into the living room, holding a bag of popcorn. He shook it to emphasize the fact he had it, causing Patton to giggle some and roll his eyes.

Smiling, the anxious side joined Patton on the couch, nodding thanks to him as he was handed a blanket. He pulled it up to his neck, one of his arms poking out from under it so he could reach into the bag of popcorn.

The shift from boyfriends to just close friends had been a long, hard journey for the two sides. But in the end, they both knew that this was better than pretending they were still in love to avoid heartbreak.

And now, a year later, they knew they probably couldn't try for a romantic relationship again, but that was okay. Because, even only just as friends, at least they still had each other, and at the end of the day, that's what mattered the most to them.

At first, I was hesitant about writing this, but I went with the idea anyway. This was partly based off of real life, as I felt that after a while, my relationship with someone was more platonic than it was romantic, and very recently, I decided to end it, since it was the best decision for both of us. So sup, I'm now a single kiddo, but that's okay.

Enjoy, guys!
