(Ray POV)

I walked into my house quietly and tried to make it upstairs without my mom seeing me. As i tip toe past the kitchen i see her jerk her head up from the pot of food she was stirring. I quickened my pace but then i heard her calling out to me.

"Ray, is that you?" She asks.

"No mom it's a murderer," I say rolling my eyes and turning back around heading into the kitchen. She chuckles and glances at me quickly before doing a double take and dropping the spoon in the pot. She quickly walks over to me and grabs my chin, jerking my head up so that were face to face.

Her eyes widen as she sees the bruise under my eye. "Ray, what happened?"

"Nothing," I say pulling my face away from her and trying to walk away. My mom grabs me by my hoodie and pulls me backwards.

"Tell that to the bruise under your eye, Ray!" She yells.

"It's nothing serious mom, we played dogeball in gym and i got hit. It was an accident." I say without giving eye contact.

My mother crosses her arms. "Have you been fighting again Ray?" She asks. I continue to stare at the wall and she slams her palm down on the table. "Damn it Ray, haven't you had enough of switching schools? I thought changing your school again would give you a fresh start, why can't you stay out of trouble?"

My fist clench and i rack my brain for something to respond with but i come up blank. Why am i always in trouble? I mean that thing with Jacob was none of my buisness and if i hadn't gotten involved i would have been home free.

But i know how it feels to be the center of bullying and it hurts. I guess i just wanted to stand up for someone even though i struggle to stand up for myself half the time.

"I'm going to bed," I say turning away from my mother.

She sighs heavily. "Dinner's going to be ready soon."

"I'm too tired to eat." I mumble heading towards the stairs and climbing them to get to my room. Once inside i slam the door shut and kick off my shoes. I flop down on my bed without turning on my light and just lay in the dark with my head spinning.

Getting into a fight with Craig and Chris wasn't that bad, the bad part was letting Chris jerk me around like a helpless bitch infront of the girls. It took all i had to keep myself calm when he lifted me out my seat today in detention. I cracked jokes to make myself seem fear less, i learned to master my quiet and collected expression a long time ago.

I like making people laugh but usually I'm the one gettting laughed at. I mean it's bad enough I'm known as the Domo kid, there's not much more humiliation i can take. I was even more humiliated when i noticed one particular girl watching as the scene went down. I'm not dropping names though cause i know i have no chance and i don't need anyone's pity.

Suddenly my little brother Tay Tay came running into my room, he climbs on my bed and sits on my chest. He cocks his head to the side and  gazes at me with his wide eyes. "Wassup man?" I ask folding my arms behind my head.

Tay Tay shrugs. "Are you sleepy Ray?" He asks pulling my domo hat off my head and putting it on his own. I nod and he looks up at the ceiling lost in thought, then his face lights up. "Want me to read you a bed time story?"

I'm about to say no since i'd rather go straight asleep but i didn't want to wipe the smile off his little face. "Alright, but only one."

Tay Tay scrambles off my bed and races to his own room to grab a book. I changed into some basket ball shorts and a random t shirt while i wait for him to come back. When Tay returns he climbs onto my bed and sits right on my lap with his book about trucks.

"Alright, don't fall asleep this time." Tay says giving me a evil look.

I laugh and sit up better. "I won't, i promise."

As Tay reads to me and points out pictures of trucks i think about how easy this kid has it. He goes to school and colors all day and makes friends with just about anyone. He met an old lady on the bus one day and he instantly began calling her his best friend. Suddenly i frowned, the world could be so cruel to people as they get older. I didn't want Tay Tay to be destroyed by it and pushed into silence like i had.

My head swirled with thoughts and before i knew it I couldn't hear Tay anymore and my eyelids began to fall shut. Just as i was about to reach the peak of dream land i heard a hard thud. I jumped and opened my eyes quickly to see that the book had fallen to the floors and Tay was slumped against me with his eyes close and his breathing soft.

I slowly moved and cradled him in my arms and carried Tay to his room. I laid him in his race car bed and plugged his night light in. As i left his room I ran into my mom who was coming upstairs. We lock eyes for a minute before she pulls me closer to her.

"Ray, you know you can tell me anything. Right?" She asks with worry lines creasing her forehead.

I nod. "Yeah," This woman is so persistant, she's so annoying sometimes but in a nice motherly way.

"If you're having problems in school again just let me know." She says stroking one of my braids before her thumb and fore finger.

"Why? So i can switch schools again and be labeled a social out cast? No thanks mom, I can handle myself." I say pulling away from her, letting my braid drop against my shoulder.

"Ray," My mother says to me in a soft voice.

I lean down to her height and kiss her cheek softly. "Goodnight,"

I spin away from her quickly and go into my room, closing my door roughly behind me. Even my own mother thinks there's something wrong with me.

Flopping down on my bed i pull my covers over my head and close my eyes, fighting with my mind to find sleep. Soon enough I feel my thoughts slipping away as i enter la la land. Before i fell asleep, I remember thinking that tomorrow's a brand new day and it can only get better.
