(Ray POV)

I knew something was wrong as soon as I reached my house. A white BMW sits in my driveway next to my moms blue honda. The license plate is from New York. I grimace as a sudden nervousness settles into my stomach.

When I get through the door, the first thing I hear is laughter from multiple people. More than just my mom and Tayshaun. I put my bags down in the corner of the hallway and wander to the living room slowly. I hear a women's voice that doesn't belong to my mom while Tay's usual laughter rings in my ears.

I think my heart stopped for a second when I walked into my living room. Sitting on the couch like best friends was my mother and the woman my father left her for. Melissa Parker.

Another shock came to my system when I spot my dad on the floor, racing remote control cars. It was like a happy get together that I wasn't invited to.

"What's going on?" I blurt. Everyone's heads turn towards me and my mother jumps up, wrapping me in a tight hug

"Ray, I didn't even hear you come in!" She exclaims. I hug her back quickly and pull back to see Melissa and my dad giving me small smiles. They look uneasy just like my stomach felt.

Tay doesn't even acknowledge me, he's too busy trying to get his car unstuck from under the couch. He looked happy though, which I don't understand. How could he be happy that our dad is visiting? The man who hasn't been in our life for the longest? Now he pops up out of no where with the audacity to drag along Melissa.

I glance at Melissa, she was wearing one of those two tone maxi dresses with thick wedge sandals. Her blonde hair falling down her back as her blue eyes gaze at me. That's right, my dad left my mom for a white lady.

"Seriously though," I say looking around. "What's going on?"

My father stands up and walks over to me. He reaches out to place a hand on my shoulder but I jerk backwards away from him. Something flashes across his face. Surprise? Hurt?

"Ray I came here because I've finally come to my senses." My father says. "I'm sorry for neglecting you. I want you and Tay back in my life."

I couldn't believe this. I was stunned to the point where I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or not. "You're kidding me right? When I wanted you in my life you wanted nothing to do with me. Now suddenly you show up out of no where asking for forgiveness? Hell no,"

 "Hell no," Tay echoes.

"Watch your mouth Ray." My mother warns like it's my fault the kid is a parrot.

My father steps closer to me, his eyes crinkled with hurt. "Please Ray, can we please just talk. I know I haven't been here for a while but I know you need me in your life. I'm your father."

"Are you sure?" I ask. His face was twisted into a hurt frown and I could see the surprise in his eyes. He glances at my mother in defeat and she sighs heavily.

"Ray we've talked this through already. I think it would be healthy for you and your father to rebuild your relationship." She says.

My jaw dropped slightly. "Mom! I've been so strong without him. Why are you trying to make me crumble into his clutches again?" I ask, hurt clear in my voice.

"Ray there are times when you don't have to be a trooper. I think it will be easier for all of us if your father at least tries to come back into our lives." She says.

"I'm not Tay, mom," I say shaking my head. "You can't give me a toy and everything will be forgotten. I needed him when I was kid and I'm not one anymore. If Tay needs a father figure it can be me because this douche bag doesn't know the first thing about parenting. He barely raised me!"
