"Let’s take these broken wings and learn to fly"

~

“It’s not your fault you were born ugly” She snarled, kissing her finger and her little followers did the same. They touched finger tips making a hissing sound and walked away like they were in some sort of fashion parade. Glaring at them as they disappeared from view, I hid a frown.

I forced the tears back into my eyes and gulped as I regained my confidence. They couldn’t hurt me, they couldn’t push me down. They had no control over me; I didn’t care what they said nor did, sticks and stones, right?

“Don’t let them get you down, you’re beautiful, Anna” Tristan jumped next to me in the school dinner queue. A few people moaned but nobody really cared, it’s not like they gave a damn if someone pushed in to get todays slobber before them.

Tristan was my best friend and always would be… but only because I was no good at making new friends.

We had been close as babies, with our mothers taking us to the same play group. And then I guess we just stayed close throughout school. Rumours had spread that we were dating but we had put them out like a flame. We were just friends. I guess Tristan was more popular than me, but he was kind and way to sympathetic to ditch me. He had a dirty, sandy blonde colour hair and the smoothest voice you’ve ever heard. His eyes were almost yellow, they shone like stars. His lips were a vibrant red colour and were as tempting to just stare at as his eyes. I had to rip my gaze away from him before he would notice.

“Who said they were getting me down?” I laughed, hopelessly hiding the hurt in my voice. Tristan raised his eyebrows but said nothing else as the dinner lady threw a spoonful of meat that looked very unappetising on my plate.

Silently we walked to the only empty table in the hall, the one that practically had our names written on it. We sat in the same place each lunch time.

“So, do you want to come to the cinema with me after school?” He asked as we set our plates down. I frowned, why did he even ask anymore? I’d always be doing a big fat nothing due to the fact I had one friend and a family that were completely obsessed with my little sister but couldn’t give a damn about me. I’d never once said no to hanging out with him.

“I have nothing better to do, what film?” I sighed, poking the slobber.

“I don’t know we’ll see when we get there” He smiled mischievously. He had something planned, I could tell. I sighed and pushed the plate away from me. “Aren’t you going to eat something?” He frowned, he had always been concerned about me never eating. He’d tried to force me to go to a doctor once but I’d refused. There was nothing wrong with me.

“Well, I’m not eating this crap” I stared at the plate. The pile of oozing gunk seemed to be breathing. He laughed and bravely put a spoonful in his mouth. I nearly choked on thin air due to laughter as he made an utterly hilarious face while spitting it back out. I wasn’t disgusted at this like I might have been if someone else had done it, we were close enough not comment when one of us spat out food.

“God, It tastes like elephant crap!” He exclaimed, frantically looking for his water bottle in his bag.

“And you would know what elephant crap tastes like… how?” I choked on my own laughter, it looked even more horrible on his plate after he’d spat it out. It was covered in saliva and chewed up.

He finally found his drink and poured the water down his throat. Half of it wasn’t going into his mouth at all, just falling onto the table. I was laughing way too hard now, I could hardly breathe.

“Hey, Anna” Hope snickered, slamming her hands down on the table and leaning over to show off her amazing figure and probably showing Tristan a little too much cleavage. I pursed my lips, Hope was the girl that had called me ugly earlier, and as you could tell, she wasn’t exactly my best friend.  “Looking hot.” She winked at Tristan, who was currently looking a little messy, with water all around his face. But Hope and Tristan got on, they were friends. That’s the only thing I hated Tristan for.

“What do you want?” I mumbled, fiddling with my thumbs. I always seemed to feel like a peasent when she was around, she completely took every bit of joy out of my day. Like the queen of ice. Yeah, the queen of ice.

“Actually, I want to talk to you” She smiled, showing her glossy white teeth. An intimidating smile was the last thing I wanted.

Before I could answer she grabbed my shoulder and dragged me out of my seat. Literally, dragged me. Tristan looked a tad worried when I glanced behind me.  She pulled me out the hall and into a little outside room I’d never known was here.

What could she want?

“Listen freak.” She snarled, slamming me up the wall. My head hit it hard and made me go a little dizzy for a few seconds.  “Tristan is my property, everybody knows that, so right now, I’m asking you kindly to not go the cinema with him.” She glared at me and in the eyes that usually held confidence and power shone green with envy. She pushed me harder up the wall when no words came as a reply.

“Kindly?” I laughed bitterly. Where the hell was this confidence coming from? “You can’t tell me what to do, I’m not one of your little clones!” I laughed, pushing her away from me. Her followers stood behind her gasped in unison.  She glared at me, opening her mouth to hit me with yet another insult but I refused to listen to it. I pushed my way past her and back into the canteen I noticed Tristan was still sitting down.

Thankful, I returned to my seat.

“What was that all about” He frowned. The dinner lady had probably given him a cloth to wipe up his mess so he was currently sweeping around the table with a disgustingly dirty piece of fabric.

I shrugged and looked back in the direction I’d came from, Hope was just walking back into room, looking completely oblivious to what had happened.

She glanced at me and showed no emotion, no hate nor jealousy. Striding to the popular table she faked a smile at me before turning her attention to the table. Tristan threw me a suspicious look but I just smiled back.

“Come on” He sighed, finishing wiping the table. He stood up and grabbed my arm. As we walked out of the hall I ignored Hope’s deadly looks.  “You're acting weird today.” He sighed and stared into my eyes.

Oh god, he had such amazing eyes. He was amazing. Just pure… amazing.

DAMN IT ANNA! STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM.

“Am I?” I finally mumbled. I looked at the floor, why did he have to be so kind…?

He sighed, giving up.

“Listen Anna-” He started but the bell rung and cut off whatever he was going to say. As the crowds of people started to push us away from each other he gave me another worried look. “Remember the cinema! I’ll pick you up at 6!” He shouted before he was completely out of view.  I sighed as people pushed me side wards into to the brick wall, they probably didn’t even notice me, and I was nothing but a nobody to them.
