Things started out icy.
Mifune had hoped that their reinstated ‘I love yous’ would smooth things out a bit, but to no avail. After all, Saki was still torn between the memory of Asher and the living Mifune, and the fear of the Nagani family getting hurt.
They both agreed it not best to tell the girls--yet. Honestly, Mifune couldn’t wait until they did, because he could only imagine how giddy Angela would become.
They met in secret, after school or during, so the girls wouldn’t find out. Their moments together were brief and short-lived, but welcomed all the same.
“Saki?” he asked one evening when the girls were asleep. “I hate to be so blunt, but, why do you still wear the ring?”
She looked down at her finger, where the small diamond rest in all of its silver glory. “I don’t know,” she answered truthfully. “I suppose I haven’t thought about what taking it off would mean.”
“Well, it would mean the truth,” Mifune reasoned, “that you are no longer engaged.”
“I know, but, I just--I don’t think I’m quite ready to admit that.”
“Alright.”
That easily, Mifune admitted his defeat, knowing that Saki would always love Asher Tyson.
