Mifune woke the next day.

He sat up in the hospital cot, his chest heaving. “Angela!” he cried upon seeing his daughter.

The witch stared at him from across the room, her eyes bright and pink, but dark all the same. She started sobbing as she ran to hug him, nearly crushing him in the process. “Where is--”

“Scarlett’s with Marie,” Angie whispered, tightening her choke-hold on the samurai.

“Good, and Saki?” Angela said nothing, only crying harder. “Angie?”

“She’s with Kana,” she said, choking on tears. “The witch who hurt you and killed Asher. Saki--left. Willingly, too.”

Mifune wouldn’t--couldn’t--believe a word.

“Are you sure?” he demanded.

“Lord Death said so,” she sobbed. “Mifune, why would she do this?”

The samurai held the girl close, trying not to imagine the worse. “I don’t know,” he said. “I truly don’t.”

“I thought she loved us.”

He shut his eyes, breathing deeply. “Me too.”
