My heart was beating so fast as I ran along the hospital corridors. Tears were streaming down my eyes as I recalled our last conversation. It was my fault. What happened to him was my fault. Slade's blood was in my hands.
I hated Slade but I never really wanted something bad to happen to him. I wanted to hurt him with a punch or a slap, but never to have his life on the line.
The moment I reached his private room, I froze before I could even touch the door handle. Shame and guilt combined was enough to make me feel like the biggest jerk in Filimon Heights.
Before I could even take a step back, the door opened and I saw Silver walking out of the room with crying eyes. And when our eyes met, she hugged me right away.
It was the first time I saw Silver cry like that. I saw her break down and cry before but this time it was different. When I received her call, telling me that Slade's been in an accident, I knew right then that her heart was ripped to shreds.
"W-what happened?" I tried to stop my voice from trembling as Silver and I both sat on the bottom set of stairs, away from the sight of everyone else.
Humahangos si Silver habang nagpupunas ng luha. "S-sabi ng mga pulis binangga raw ang sasakyan ni Slade ng isang van. They said it was a miracle that he only got minor injuries." A forced smile appeared on her face. "I should be happy that he's okay but part of me is still torn over the fact that I almost lost him tonight."
Pinunasan ko ang mga luha ko at niyakap ko siya nang mahigpit. She continued bawling as she leaned her head on my shoulders. "I kept trying to remember the last thing I told him and I couldn't even remember what it was... I didn't even bother saying 'goodbye' to him when I left the house earlier. I kept giving him the cold shoulder, yelling at him for the pettiest things, blaming him for everything. I kept making him feel that I hate him but I don't really hate him! He's my other half and I can't even picture life without him!"
I looked up as I hugged her tighter, trying to stop my own eyes from crying. Instead of saying comforting words, I continued hugging her as I listened to every single one of her qualms.
It was painful knowing Slade was hurt and Silver was hurting, but it was more painful knowing the fact that I cause I brought them that pain. Deep down, I knew it was my fault.
Silver and I returned to Slade's room and found him lying on the bed, still unconscious. My heart dropped when I saw his face covered in bruises. I froze as my breathing hitched.
"Rei, are you okay?" Silver called me out, snapping me out of my trance-like state.
"Y-yeah..." Humarap ako kay Silver at kinuyom ang kamay ko para maitago ang panginginig nito.
Itinuro ni Silver ang kamay at tinuro ang mukha ko. Napahawak ako sa pisngi ko at napagtantong basa pala ito dahil sa luha kong tuluyang pumatak. Mabilis ko itong pinunasan sabay ngiti. "Can I borrow your phone?"
Dala ang cellphone ni Silver, lumabas ako at nagtungo sa rest room na nasa dulo ng pasilyo. Dahil madaling araw na, mag-isa lang ako sa loob ng rest room. Nang maikulong ang sarili ko sa loob ng cubicle, kinopya ko agad ang numero niya at tinawagan siya.
Makaraan ang ilang sandali, nahigit ko ang hininga nang tuluyan siyang sumagot mula sa kabilang linya. "Hello?"
"I-it's Reika.." I couldn't help but cry so I covered my mouth with my trembling hands.
"Reika?!" Inaantok man, halata ang gulat at pag-aalala sa kanyang boses. "Bakit ka umiiyak? Anong nangyari? Ayos ka lang ba?"
"N-naaksidente si Slade... We're in Filimon hospital right now. Slade is okay but he's still unconscious while Silver is a mess. Th-they need you." I took a deep breath as I tried to stop my voice from breaking into a sob.
"Reika, ok ka lang ba?" Tanong muli ni Daddy. Napailing ako kahit alam kong hindi niya naman ako makikita.
"Just get your ass here b-but careful okay? The twins need you." And with that I ended the call.
Ilang sandali rin akong nanatili sa loob ng banyo, hinayaan ang sarili kong magpadala sa bugso ng damdamin lalo't nag-iisa lang ako. Alam kong oras na lumabas ako ng banyo, kailangan kong magpakatatag. Everything was my fault and I have to take responsibility for it. I can't just cry and wallow in self-loathe, I have to do whatever it takes to help the twins.
"Rei?"
Bigla kong narinig ang boses ni Silver kaya naman dali-dali kong pinunasan ang luha saka lumabas mula sa cubicle.
"Slade's awake!" Silver smiled widely despite of the tears in her eyes. She grabbed my hand and began to run so I followed right away.
The moment we reached the room, a doctor and nurse were already standing by the side of Slade, checking up on him. His doctor just so happens to be Haji's Mom.
Even if he was still at his weakest state, Slade looked at my direction and when our eyes met, his lips rose into an awkward smile. He looked at Silver and spoke in low voice. "Pakisabi kay Reika--"
"Hoy demonyo, nandito ako. Just talk to me." I jokingly rolled my eyes and sighed. "On second thought, don't talk yet. You look like hell so you better rest."
Tumawa si Slade ng mahina at pumikit na para bang nakaramdam ng ginhawa.
"She's right, young man. You have to take a good amount of rest. You still have 2 broken ribs. Later, we'll prepare you for a CT Scan to make sure that you didn't have any concussion," sabi ng Mommy ni Haji. Mabuti na lang talaga at saktong ito ang naging doktor niya kaya magagamit ko ang pagiging Magno sa pagtulong sa mga bayarin. I'm also sure that he's in good hands with her. Kung gaano katino ang mga magulang ni Haji, siya namang pagkagago nito.
"By the way, can you try moving your toes?" Tanong nito kaya lahat kami ay napatingin sa mga daliri niya sa paa. Naramdaman ko ang paghawak ni Silver sa braso ko. Halatang kinabahan. Lumuwag lang ang hawak niya nang nagawa ni Slade na maigalaw ang mga daliri niya sa paa. Nagawa naman niya itong maigalaw. Sinuri din ni Dr. Kazemi ang mga tuhod ni Slade sa pamamagitan ng malumanay na pagpindot sa tuhod gamit ang maliit at malambot na uri ng martilyo.
"Doc?" Biglang tawag ni Slade sa pansin nito.
Bigla akong kinabahan nang makita ang takot sa mukha ni Slade.
"Hey, you okay?" Tanong agad ni Silver at lumapit sa kakambal.
"I... I can't move my right arm." Namilog ang mga mata ni Slade kasabay ng panunubig ng kanyang mga mata. "D-doc hindi ko maigalaw ang kamay ko!"
