16 - No More Secrets

It turns out that Tony had upgraded my suit while I was gone because there were a whole bunch of new features in it. It also looked a lot more sleek and nice.

We were currently headed toward the Expo where Justin Hammer currently was. I could hear the sound of his voice fade out as we neared the large building.

We both fly to the stage where Rhodey is standing in the suit he took along with Hammer. Tony and I land and the entire room Burt's into applause and screams.

I look over to Hammer's face as this happens and I stifle a laugh. We got a louder cheer for just showing up than he did for his entire presentation.

Tony stands up and walks next to Rhodey while I walk over to Hammer, placing a hand on his shoulder like Tony is doing to Rhodey. We both wave at the crowd.

Rhodey taps into our coms and starts talking. "Y/n? You're back?" He doesn't give me time to answer. "Tony, there are civilians present. I'm here on orders, let's not do this right now."

Tony ignores him. "Give them a wave."

Hammer tries to play it off like this was planned. "Hey, all right. Yeah!"

He tries to move out of my grip but I just tighten it and he winces in pain. Tony ignores him and continues speaking to Rhodey. "All these people are in danger. We gotta get them out of here. You gotta trust me for the next five minutes."

Rhodey scoffs. "Yeah, I tried that. I got tossed around your house, remember?" He turned to me. "Y/n, is this true? What's going on?"

I nodded to him. "It's true alright. Just trust us."

Tony cut in. "Listen, I think he's working with Vanko."

"Vanko's alive?" Rhodey sounded baffled.

Tony left Rhodey's side and took a couple steps toward Hammer as I held him in place. "Where's Vanko?"

Justin tried to play it off. "What?

I repeated Tony, my grip tightening on his shoulder. "Where's Vanko?" I gritted my teeth.

"Who?"

Tony took another step toward Justin. "Tell me."

Justin tried to dodge the question. "What are you doing here man?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Rhodey's voice sounded panicked. I looked to him to see the large machine gun on his suit focus itself on Tony.

Tony sounds confused. "Is that you?"

"No, I'm not doing that. That's not me. I can't move. I'm locked up. I'm locked up!" Rhodey starts panicking as the other drones around us take aim at either Tony or I. "Get out of here! Go! This whole system's been compromised."

I let go of Hammer and launch into the air alongside Tony. "Let's take it outside."

We launch into the air, bullets spraying after us from the drones on the ground.

Rhodey's suit takes off after us along with the drones meant for the Air Force.

I lay alongside Tony as we swerve to avoid bullets. "Jarvis, break in. I need to own him."

"Yes, sir."

"Y/n," I look to Tony as he continues to swerve, "Spit from me. It's Vanko. He's after me. I don't want you to get hurt-"

I cut him off. "I've already told you I'm not backing out of this fight Tony!"

"That's not what I meant." A digital image of all of Hammer's suits appeared on the screen in front of me. "Go protect the people. Once I get Rhodey back, we'll take care of Vanko. But people still need saving."
