Verity's first letter came within a few days. She had taken Emma to a dress shop and bought her some new dresses. Emma could hardly believe how beautiful they were. Verity said Emma looked like a proper young lady all dressed up.
The next letter came to tell about Emma's bandages coming off. To celebrate, Verity bought Emma a beautiful pair of shoes. Emma said that they were fit for a princess and danced around the parlor when she first had them on. Adding to that, Verity was happy to report that Emma loved reading, had mastered how to knit surprisingly fast, and knew just how to make baby Andrew laugh. To celebrate Emma's birthday, she had a Madeira cake with candied oranges. As a gift she received a leather-bound journal.
Two months rolled by. Ross searched all of the villages in Cornwall and even further inland. There was word about the revolution going on in France, and fear was starting to creep into England. Demelza's two brothers came to live in the area, and Demelza gave birth to a daughter, Clowerence. When they sent word to Verity and Emma, Emma sent back a beautiful knitted bonnet for the new baby. The next letter that came was from Emma herself:
Dear Ross and Demelza,
Ms. Verity and her stepdaughter have been very kind to me and I hope to come back to Nampara soon.
Not long after that, Verity had received a letter from Ross; it was time for Emma to come back.
