Chapter 25: Secrets and Lies

Brix and Ember have been talking to each other secretly through email for weeks now. "The inter-u is coming up. Are you coming?' Brix emailed. She's still using Ghaille's laptop because she's still using Ghaille's email

The laptop chimed 'I don't know. My parents know you'll be there' Ember replied

'I wanna see you so bad'

'Me too'

'This emailing sucks! Where are we in the 90's?'

'Lol! We'll get through this' Ember replied

'Well, I guess this is better than writing letters because my penmanship is the best in the entire universe that you wont even want to read it'

'Do you mean 'cant read it'? Hahaha!'

'I love you'

On the other side of the screen, Ember couldn't help but smile 'I... she was about to reply when someone grabbed her laptop "Mom!" The older woman read through their conversation then dropped the laptop forcefully "mom! Stop!" Ember sobbed as she tried to stop her from stomping on the device.

"How many time do I have to remind you to stop talking to that lesbian" spat Martha "I swear Ember!"

"What!" Ember challenged "what are you going to do mom? Isn't it enough that you lock me here like an animal?"

"Well, if you haven't interacted with that abomination then you could've been living you 'normal' life and not locked here" her mom replied

"What's wrong with loving another woman mom?!"

"It's a sin!" argued the woman "her 'kind' will burn in hell like all the other sinners"

"Then I'll burn with her because I love her!" Ember replied.

She felt her left cheek sting a bit "take that back! Ember I didn't raise you to be like that! I thought you better than that! Love? You don't kwon what you're talking about. You'll grow out of it. So until then you'll stay here away from that daibla" she said slamming the door behind her. Ember sobbed while she picks up the device's debris.

Days passed and they all sat in the dining table quietly eating when one of the maids came in "Madam, you have a visitor" she said

A guy came in holding a bouquet of flowers "Good evening" he started

"Miguel!" Martha shoot up from her seat and went to give him a hug "Look at you! Eres guapo!" Miguel smiled greeted the others on the table "come join us! Here sit"

"Gracias senora" he replied

"I'm not hungry anymore. May I be excused?" Ember asked standing up but her mother stopped her

"Ember, hija. Don't be rude. We have a guest" said Oliver to his daughter

"So?" Ember replied but her mother glared at her so, she sat back down sloppily.

"Ember!" said Martha "I'm so sorry Miguel"

"It's ok, ma'am" the guy replied. He turned to Ember "These are for you" he gave her the flowers

Ember took them and dropped it on the floor with a forced smile "Ember!" said Martha

"What? It slipped" Ember replied "besides, what is he doing here anyways?" Miguel was her suitor for years now and for Ember, she only see him as a friend or in this occasion her mothers pet.

"Well, we're here to talk about you engagement" said Martha making Ember spat her drink on her brother who glared at her.

"What?!" Ember asked

"You heard me right. You will marry Miguel" her mother told her

"I will never marry him" Ember retorted

"It's for your own good, hija" said Oliver

"For my own good? Marrying me off is for my own good?" said Ember who still couldn't believe on what she heard.

"Yes, so that you'll have a normal life and not with that lesbian!" Martha spat

"I'd rather die!" Ember got up from her seat and went up to her room

"Ember!" her mother called out, but she was already gone.

Days passed and Ember still locked herself from her bedroom. There was a doorbell and one of the maids opened it "Hello. Who are they?" she asked

"Hi" a girl replied "we're Ember's friends"

"Linda, who's at the door?" Martha asked who approached the front door.

"Good morning, ma'am. I'm Naomi and this is Claire. We're from Ember's friends" said the girl

"Hello, what are you doing here?" Martha asked

"Well, ma'am we noticed Ember haven't been in school lately and she haven't been answering her phone, so we decided to come visit her. And also give her the notes for the classes she missed" Naomi explained.

The older woman was sceptical at first but Naomi was very convincing. So, she let them in. "Linda! Show them Ember's room, please" she turned to them again "do you girls need anything, drinks?"

"That would be very nice, ma'am" Claire replied.

They knocked on the door "go away!" they heard Ember shout on the other side

"Em! It's Naomi and Claire" Naomi replied. They heard footsteps running towards the door and Ember gave them a hug "Hey, what happened?"

Ember dragged them inside the room and locked it back again. She gave them another hug "I missed you guys so much"

"We we're so worried!" Naomi told the girl "Br—" she lowered her voice because someone might be listening on the door "Brix is so worried. She told us what happened" Naomi whispered

"Brix?" Ember asked "how is she?"

"She's ok" Claire replied "Matter of fact, she's the one who told us to come here to come and check up on you. She's worried sick when you stopped replying"

Ember pointed at the shattered laptop "they wouldn't let me talk to her"

The door opened and they all turned. It was just the maid with their snacks. Claire slid her a book "by the way, you missed a lot of classes. Here, I made you a copy" Ember gave her a confused look "but do it later, let eat!"

When the woman left, the girls caught up with stuff and hours later they decided to go "thank you again for visiting" Ember told them by the door

"Pshh! It's no biggy" Naomi gave her a hug

"We'll see you at the inter-u?" Claire asked

Ember took a quick glance at the woman seating in the living room then back to her friends "I don't know. But we'll see"

"Fine" Claire gave her a hug too "Look inside the book" she whispered "We'll come back again!" she said it louder

"Thank you, Mrs McGregor for having us" said Naomi

"The food was great. Thank you" said Claire

"No problem. Come visit again, girls" the older woman replied

"See you guys" Naomi bid them, and they left

"Those are the girls you should be hanging around with and not that lesbian" said Martha beside her

Ember decided not to reply and went back to her room where she saw the book Claire gave her. She opened it and saw the middle cut out and there's a phone inside it. She quickly took it and hid it before the maid came in the room.
