"What do you mean you'll be working tomorrow?" You asked, your tone sounding harsher than you wanted it to. Your eyes stared at your boyfriend, noting how his blue and brown eyes looked anywhere but towards you.
"We're really close to cracking this case." Todoroki simply replied, shrugging off his rain-soaked coat. He threw it over a nearby chair, casting a glance towards where you were sitting at the kitchen table, wincing at the look on your face. What he expected was an annoyance, maybe some anger. What he didn't expect was for you to look so hurt.
He quickly looked away, his body absentmindedly heading towards the liquor cabinet to pour himself a drink.
"But tomorrow's your birthday–"
"Yes, I'm aware," Todoroki said, cutting you off. You stared at him in disbelief, your fingers beginning to angrily tap against the cool wooden table. You took a moment to cool yourself down, careful of what you should say next. The last thing you wanted was an argument between the two of you.
"Tomorrow's your birthday and we made plans Shouto." Your eyes could make out Todoroki's outline inside the kitchen, fully aware he was ignoring you. Sighing to yourself, you stood up and made your way towards the kitchen, leaning against the doorway with your arms crossed.
"Just take tomorrow off, please Shouto. You're overworking yourself and I'm getting worried." You added, watching as Todoroki finished pouring his drink, turning around to look at you.
"No one asked you to worry." He said, his reply almost as bitter as the drink in his hands. Your eyes blankly stared at him, your mouth slightly open in shock.
"As your girlfriend, I think I have the right to worry about you!" You yelled, snapping out of your shock and taking a few steps into the kitchen.
"I know for a fact that as my girlfriend, you have no right to dictate how I live my life." He finished the drink in his hand, setting aside the glass and roughly brushing past you, leaving the kitchen. You clenched your fists, feeling the scorching hot anger course through your veins. Turning around, you trailed after him into the living room.
"I'm not trying to dictate your life–"
"Then why the hell does it feel like it?" Todoroki snapped, turning around to face you. You froze, feeling a chill run down your spine as you stared into his eyes; eyes which radiated nothing but pure anger and frustration. You ran your fingers through your hair, trying to calm your breathing.
"This is absolutely absurd Shouto. All I'm suggesting is that you take a well-deserved break on your birthday," you began. "And judging by how you can't even begin to see the stress you're under from constantly working just proves my point!"
"You don't understand what it feels like to work as a hero. The countless lives that depend on me. I don't have the luxury of taking a day off, even for my goddamn birthday no matter how much you insist on it." Todoroki's cold tone only fueled the fire burning inside of you, his words the final push your anger needed before it just exploded.
"Don't you get that Todoroki? That stupid idea that's drifting through your head is going to make you turn out exactly like Endeavor–" Your words halted to a stop, your eyes widening as you registered what you said. The anger controlling you disappeared in an instant, replaced with bitter regret. You hesitantly looked at Todoroki, your heartbreaking at the look of hurt etched on his face.
"Shit, I'm so sorry Shouto, I didn't mean that it was a mistake–"
"Maybe this entire relationship was a mistake," Todoroki mumbled out, harshly opening the door to the guest bedroom, slamming it shut behind him.
