Willow's POV

"Hey," Lorelai says, walking into the diner.

"Hey, coffee?" Luke asks.

"Please and hurry. I'm going to Manhattan, and I need to shop for some warm clothes," she says.

"You already have warm clothes," he replies.

"I have nothing."

"We're in Connecticut. It gets freezing here, same as New York," Luke says.

"It's not the same," she tells him.

"Exactly the same," he replies.

I finish clearing a table and sit at the table watching the conversation.

"I have nothing stylish enough."

"That's not true. You got the black cashmere coat."

"But it needs cleaning."

"So clean it."

"But I need some sweaters, too."

"You've got the purple, you've got the powder blue, three shades of red, a ton of black, all of which go with that coat. Plus, you've got a dozen scarves to mix and match with any of those tops," Luke tells her.

He knows too much about this woman.

"Let me shop for some clothes," she says.

"Okay," he replies.

"I like watching you two, it's fun," I say.

"So what are you doing in New York?" he asks her.

"Um, a bunch of us are going. It'll be dinner and a show," she says.

I think part of that is a lie.

"Uh, what show?" Luke asks.

"Levittown, it's a new musical," she says.

"Right, it's in previews. Doesn't officially open for a couple weeks," he says.

"Wow, so informed," Lorelai replies.

"Nicole likes the theater. Her firm has an office on Madison. I've met her there a couple of times. Saw Hairspray last week."

They talk a little more and I get back to work. Then he mentions a book that she can borrow and says she can go up to get it.

She is in for a surprise when she gets there. I keep working. Luke and I know about the pair upstairs, but I'm assuming she doesn't.

"Dude," she says, when she reaches the bottom of the stairs.

"Hey, find it okay?" he says.

"Yeah, I found everything, including a couple coupling," she says.

"Oh, Rory and Jess?"

"No, Ben and J. Lo. Yes, Rory and Jess."

"Guess I should have told you."

"You knew they were up there?" she questions.

"They ran me out. I've been hiding down here," I tell her.

"They're up there all the time."

"On the couch? Horizontal, on the couch?" she asks.

"They come up for air every so often," Luke says.

"I feel like he's trying to smother the poor girl," I add.

"And you just allow this? Luke!"

"Settle down. I go up there every ten minutes pretending to get something to keep them from something we don't want. "Oops, I forgot my pocket knife." Oops, I'm out of ones." "Hey, you a case of mustard up here?" I put the stuff in a box. I take the box upstairs every couple days, then start all over again," he says.

"And you think that suffices?" she asks.

"Look, it's better that they're safe and upstairs than someplace else. And you going up there just saved me a trip, so thanks," he says, putting his box back under the counter.

"Glad to be of service," she says.

"It's been a good system. It works," he says.

"That we know of," I mumble.

"Every ten minutes?" she asks.

"Like clockwork. Never a minute more," he replies.

"Even if you're serving a customer, it's every ten minutes?"
"If I'm in mid-pour, I stop and go up,"

"He's actually done that," I say.

"Ten minutes. Yep, that's pretty much the time it took to create Rory, and that included getting dressed, and freshening my lipstick," Lorelai says, picking up her stuff and heading toward the door.

"What?" Luke asks, confused.

"Ew, gross. Now my brain hurts," I say, covering my eyes.

"Thanks for the book," she replies.

"Cover for me," Luke says.

"Okay," I replied, resting my head on the counter, still grossed out.

He turns around and runs upstairs.

I didn't want that image, but I fear it may never leave.
