The Last

"Hey, would you like to give me a hand?" Zara asked.

She's my neighbour. For almost four years of staying here in Iceland, she's the only one who I can run to. Sobrang bait at ganda niya pa. Kahit ngayon na iingit pa rin ako sa blue eyes niya.

Kinuha ko ang isang plastic nang pinamili siya at sabay kami naglakad patungo sa pintuan nang condo niya.

"Are you really going home, tomorrow?" she asked while finding her keys.

I smile. "Yes. I miss the warm breeze of my hometown."

She chuckled. "I'm sure you do."

Zara opened her condo's door. Inilagay niya sa loob ang buhat na plastic at bumalik sa akin para kunin iyong dala ko.

"I'm going to miss you."

"We can email each other you know."

She rolled her eyes. "Shut up. You'll be busy in there."

Natawa ako. "I will reply to your messages. I promised."

She sighed and nod. "Sure, I wish you all the best in the Philippines."

"Thanks."

Bumuntong hininga ako at naglakad patungo sa condo ko. Nang buksan ko iyon, halos malinis na ito dahil nasa karton na ang mga gamit ko.

I sat on my sofa. Finally, huh? Coming home, after years. Sinandal ko ang ulo ko sa backrest at tinitigan ang passport at ticket sa center table.

Suddenly, I felt nervous. Ilang taon din 'yun. Ilang taon din akong nawala doon. Malamang, pagbalik ko, marami na ang nagbago.

I bit my lowerlips. May kung anong humaplos sa dibdib ko. I closed my eyes to prevent my tears.

Siya kaya? Nagbago na rin ba?

We still contacted each other but it wasn't the same as before. Naiintindihan ko naman kasi busy na siya sa trabaho niya. Pero...hindi ko pa rin maiwasan hindi mangamba.

My phone chimed.

Agad akong dumilat at inabot iyon. It was a message from Carrie.

From Carrie:
What time ba kita susunduin?

Napangiti ako. Ang bruhang 'to. Kahit na may problema, hindi pa rin ako kinakalimutan. He really agreed marrying that girl and now, he's stress about it. Paminsan, inaasar ko siya pero hindi siya natutuwa.

I heard they are going to get annulled, pero may conflict daw kaya hindi pa naaasikaso agad.

I type my replied.

Mga seven pm dyan. Isesend ko ticket ko, sandali lang.

I took a picture of my ticket so that he would know. Wala pang ilang minuto, nagreply na siya.
