Matt - Stupid, Small Town

The sound of crickets and other insects echoed around me as I plucked blade of grass after blade of grass. Eventually, I began to pull out full handfuls, tossing them up in the air to be carried off by the summer's wind.

I groaned silently and brought my knees up to my chest. The back of my legs were slightly wet from the moisture stuck to the grass, but I didn't bother wiping it off. "How come he invited me here but he doesn't even bother being on time?" I mumbled to myself, pouting a little. I had been waiting for about 8 minutes now, and I was contemplating just going home. It was late anyway, and I'd much rather spend my summer not waiting on a boy who can't seem to even be on time to a meeting he scheduled.

I went back to lazily picking at the grass, staring blankly at the ground. Why did he even invite me out here in the first place? Why did I even agree? I let out a sigh before a wave of anger came over me, causing me to rip a patch full of grass out and throw it in front of me. I cooled down almost immediately, not fully understanding why I got so worked up in the first place.

I sighed once again and looked up at the night sky. The bright stars filled my vision. I guess that was one perk of living in this stupid, small town; there aren't too many streetlights so they can't block out the view of the night. I smiled a little before I felt a gentle kick against my back. I whipped my head around to see who did that.

Matt's face was softly illuminated by the stars. "Hey, sorry for making you wait so long," Matt then sat next to me, very closely.

I huffed a little and looked away from him. "You know, it's rude to invite someone to a place, and then be late." I hugged my knees tighter to my chest, resting my chin on top of them. "You're lucky that I can be a patient person."

"Yeah. You're right." Matt was giving me short answers right now.

I looked up at him after we sat in silence for a few seconds, and was surprised to see that he was looking at me. My cheeks flushed a little, and I really hoped that the stars didn't light my face up the way that they did for his. I tried to maintain my gaze against his to hide my embarrassment, "So.. What did you call me out here for anyway? Especially this late at night."

Matt took a second to answer me, seemingly hesitating a little, "I wanted to see you were all." He turned his gaze away from me and directed it towards the sky. I took this time to study him now. His hair seemed to finally be washed, it didn't have that "greasy teenager boy shine" that he usually dawns- and he was wearing pj's instead of his normal jacket on jacket with jean pants. He must've attempted to sleep before calling me up. I smiled a little, the thought of Matt sleeping was actually nice due to the fact that before his "tight-knit" group split up, he rarely seemed to actually get any sleep.

I moved my eyes up to Matt's face. I couldn't see too much because it was both dark and his head was turned to the side, but for some reason it still made my chest tighten. The way his pale skin lit up perfectly, and how his eyes seemed to reflect back the stars...

"What?" Matt turned to me, catching me staring at him. I gasped a little, surprised and I quickly turned my head away quickly.

"What? Did I say something?" Maybe I did and didn't notice it. I really hope I didn't embarrass myself. Even when Matt was a troublemaking mess, I couldn't help but have feelings for him. It would be stupid to blow any small chance I have because I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

"You muttered something like 'the stars'."

"Oh, I didn't even notice." I tried to brush it off. God this was starting to get awkward.

"I noticed." Matt leaned in closer to me, and I could smell the scent of lavender come off of him. I guess they didn't have any "manly scents" at his house, but the scent suited him perfectly. "Your eyes look beautiful tonight too."

I narrowed my eyes at him, trying to pretend like the compliment wasn't making my heart race, "You're just trying to make up for keeping me waiting."

He shook his head and leaned a little closer to me, his voice barely audible, "I really mean it. I try every day to tell you that I think you look.." He trailed off and brushed his hair out of his face.

I smiled and leaned in, gaining enough confidence to leave a gentle kiss on his cheek before I could properly think not to. "I think you look... really good. Like, handsome I mean." Now was Matt's turn to turn away, I guess to hide the red that I was barely able to see creeping onto his cheeks.

"I like you... Like, like like you." Matt's voice was quiet as he spoke, "I don't know why but you just really make me feel... better about everything. You don't judge every mistake I make and you're like, supportive and stuff."

I couldn't help but smile to the point of my cheeks feeling sore. "I like you a lot too!" I blurted out without really thinking. "I've been wanting to confess for a long time..." Matt turned to me and had a surprised look plastered over his face, which slowly began to turn into a slight smile.

"So.. does this make this like, a date?" Matt was smiling now.

I rolled my eyes, "Not at all! You have to properly ask me out on a date." I playfully hit him and huffed.

"Ow! Okay, okay," he was laughing now, "Will you please go on a date with me?"

I crossed my arms and pretended to think about it, "Hmmmm. Fine, since you asked so nicely."

Matt smiled and flopped himself down onto the ground, one arm placed under his head. "I'm glad you said yes," he said with a smile as he closed his eyes.

I didn't know how to respond as he drifted off, so all I did was lay next to him, my head gently placed on top of his chest. I closed my own eyes before feeling Matt's free arm tightly wrapped around my body. Maybe this stupid, small town has two perks.
