  "Run."

His voice, full of fear and determination, echoed in her mind.

Maybe she could have run away. Maybe she could have escaped from the world crashing and burning around them. Maybe she could have clung on to the idea that Draco Malfoy was just another boy. But of course, she doesn't. Because she was Meredith Darling ( that seemed to be the reason for many of her choices these days, it seemed ) and Meredith Darling had an insatiable itch that needed to be scratched. To discover the secret he had kept so closely to his heart all those months.

But oh, how she wished she had run as far away as possible as she heard an all too familiar voice that chilled her to the very bone. She was hidden from their sight by a stack of drawers, but there was no mistaking that voice that echoed around the cavernous room. That all too familiar cackle from a woman who had lost herself to the madness of power so many years ago. Bellatrix Lestrange.

Even though there hadn't been a cut for Madam Pomfrey to fix, Meredith felt the dull ache of the Cruciatus Curse across her chest, a phantom wound left by the terrors of that night. She took a deep breath through her nose, hands trembling uncontrollably as they clutched her chest.
