And Hera queen of gods beheld
The children born where mortals dwell,
And saw amongst them comely child
With body strong and spirit wild.

A fairer babe than all his kin,
And Hera knew her husband's sin.
But still she held her peace in court,
And bid her time to gain report.

How Zeus the king of gods had strayed
From marriage bed in which they laid.
Devising cunning plan to prove
What all who saw his offspring knew.

A pair of serpents Hera drew
To serve as goddess' damning clue.
Enchanting snakes with ancient wiles
To fill them full of venom vile.

Transforming pair of common snakes
To fearsome creatures known as drakes,
And put a boon on adders head
That pair are only stricken dead.

If slain by hand of Zeus's son
Alone by demi-god undone.
She ends the wicked craft she made,
And sends the serpents down to babe.

And adders under darkness crept
To room where child of Zeus now slept.
Who laid in crib alone at night
By self not fearing Hera's spite.

And Hera waits for light of day
To see if serpents won their way.
And sun does rise and dawn does break,
And restless world of man does wake.

And proof at foot of crib is laid
In form of snakes by infant slain.
Their bodies bent and twist and choked
Like toys a child had careless broke.

And Queen descends to take her grounds
To show to Gods the proof she found.
