Misty

"Hey pretty lady."

Walking into my grandmothers' room, I smiled at the sight of her laying down watching television.

"Says the pretty lady herself." She smiled back. "How was your day love?"

Sitting up, she coughed slightly. Sighing, I got her bottle of water and handed it to her.

"I hate that you still have that lingering cough." I sat beside her.

"I'm old. It happens when old people get the flu."

"You're not that old grandma." I shook my head.

"Whatever. Now, I ask again, how was your day?"

"You're so rude." I poked her side and laughed. "My session at the shelter was good as always. I love seeing my children so happy for dance and craft."

"That's wonderful. They love you and you interact great with them so they will enjoy the sessions."

"Yep, and well with work, tuh." I scoffed and rolled my eyes.

"Oh boy, what happened?"

"More and more I'm beginning to believe that Jerry has it out for me. I really can't stand him but I need the job."

"First of all, you don't need that job. I've told you already we are fine. Second of all, why is that fool still messing with you? Does he like you or something?" She joked.

"Eww, no!" I scrunched up my face then laughed. "And I know we don't need it but it is flexible when it comes to you and your medical visits."

"I'm sure you can find something else."

"I guess. I'll look around. You need anything?" I proceeded to get up.

"No love. I'm good. I'm just gonna watch tv till it's eventually watching me." She laughed.

"Well that will be soon enough." I joked.

"Keep playing with me."

"I love you too grandma." I kissed her on her forehead.

At the age of eight I began living with her. My mother had other children but because of me being from a different father, they always had something against me.

When I was eighteen, my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and its been tough since. We've done all that we could at this point with the money we had so it was just up to her.

"Oh I almost forgot love, there is food for you in the microwave."

"Thank you."

Heading into my room, I undressed and got into the shower instantly. As the water fell from the overhead shower, I stood there allowing it to drench my entire body. I was overall tired but that wasn't anything new when it came to my day to day work.

"Thank you God for small mercies." I said in the open.

Soaping, then rinsing my skin, I eventually got out and did my night time face routine. Looking at myself in the mirror, I smiled a little then exhaled before washing off my face mask.

Heading back into my room, I semi dried my skin then wrapped my robe on me before going and getting my food.

"So what did you do today?" I asked as I reentered my grandmothers' room.

"The usual. Laundry, dust down as much as I could, straighten up around here. Oh and I went for a walk today."

"By yourself?" I stared at her.
