"i mean, vegas is only like four hours from here. you wanna just make it a lil road trip or just get on a flight?" i heard roddy ask from my bedroom. before we went to his mother's house, we went back to my house so i could find a new outfit. we talked about about his birthday while i curled my hair.i held the last curl in my hand before gently setting it down and combing through my hair. "it's up to you, babe. which one do you wanna do?" i directed the question at him now. i stepped back and looked at myself in the mirror. roddy walked into the bathroom next.
"i mean, we can make it a road trip. then we can fly to miami after that," he stopped and looked at me, "you look so pretty. you should wear this necklace." he complimented and pointed to the pendant with my name on it. i nodded and put it on.
i applied a small amount of lip gloss and walked out of the bathroom. "that's cool with me. again, it's your birthday. i'm cool with whatever you wanna do." i reached for my knee high boots and put them on. i stood up.
roddy walked up to me and adjusted my sweater. "you look so pretty." he complimented.
i threw my arms around his shoulders. "thank you," i planted a small kiss on his lips, "i love you."
he flashed the biggest smile at me. "i love you more princess." we had both become really comfortable with using the term already. it almost felt natural. i think it's because we spent so much time trying to avoid saying it when we both knew that we felt it. "you ready to go?" he asked and grabbed his phone. i nodded and led the way out the door and to his car. i tried my hardest to hide the fact that i was nervous as hell. we got in the car and i didn't even wanna connect my phone. he looked over at me for a second, waiting to see if i would. he shrugged and pulled out his phone instead, connecting it and turning on lil uzi. i sat back in my seat and relaxed as we headed to compton.
the closer we got to our destination, the more nervous i felt. we were five minutes away and i was nearly shaking out of my skin. i dropped my phone in my purse and reapplied my lip gloss as roddy turned off his gps. i looked around at my surroundings, taking everything in. this is really where roddy grew up. "this the same house you grew up in?" i asked, before i realized that this was the first thing i had said since we left my house.
roddy shook his head. "nah, i bought my momma a new crib. i woulda brought her out to LA with me, but she was dead set on staying in compton." i watched as he pulled into the driveway of his mother's house. there were 3 cars parked on the street next to the house, presumably belonging to family members. he cut the engine and turned to look at me. "you okay?" he asked.
"i'm fine," i lied. i had no reason to sit there and lie to him like that, i think i was trying to convince myself that everything was fine.
i turned to get out of the car and roddy locked the door. "we're not getting out until you tell me what's wrong. i can see it all on your face." he probed.
"i'm actually okay, i promise. i'm just nervous as fuck. that's all." i told him.
he sighed. "babe, you have no reason to be nervous. my family gon be some of the nicest people you ever meet. i wouldn't bring you around if they weren't." he reassured. i nodded.
i stopped to take a breath. roddy got out of the car first and rushed to my door to open it, grabbing my hand and helping me out of the car. he gave me a little twirl as he closed the door. i giggled and gave him a small kiss before i followed him to the door. he didn't waste any time knocking on the door; instead he just walked straight inside. i grabbed his hand and held him close to me as he guided me through to the living room.
the entire house smelled of potpourri and soul food. i looked around at all of the decorations on the wall, many of which included baby pictures of roddy and his little brother. "roddy!" i heard behind me. we both turned around to see two teenagers running towards him. i let go of his hand and he opened his arms to hug both of them. when they both pulled away, they looked over at me. the girl stepped forward first. "hey! my name's madison." she introduced.
