i found myself pacing around the living room when india said she was on her way to my apartment. i could feel my palms starting to sweat, i rubbed them against my sweatpants. cassius walked out of his room and looked at me as he walked into the kitchen. "why the hell you pacing? fuck is wrong with you?" he reached for the box of cinnamon toast crunch.
i sat down on the couch, but my leg wouldn't stop shaking. "india is on her way over." i sighed. cash came and sat down in the recliner.
"and why does that make you nervous... she found out, didn't she?" i only nodded. he threw his head back and burst out laughing. i rolled my eyes as he regained his composure. "jas, i told yo stupid ass she was gon find out! we all told you to cut the shit off. even momma told you and you ain't wanna listen. how she find out?"
"she caught us that night i went over to help her get ready for her date." i looked down at my bare feet.
cash sputtered and started to choke on his cereal. "you did it in her house? she ain't whoop yo ass?" i shook my head. cash started to laugh again, but this time he didn't stop. i jumped when i heard a knock on the door. cash got up from his chair and walked back to his room, still laughing when he closed the door. i got up and walked over to the door slowly. india knocked again before i made it to the door. i reached for the door and took a deep breath, bracing myself for what was behind the door. i opened it wide and let her in without saying a word. she looked me up and down and walked in, making a spot for herself on the couch. i closed the door and sat down in the recliner.
i could hear cash chewing his cereal behind his bedroom door, he was clearly listening. india looked at me, but she didn't say anything for a minute. i couldn't read her face, but i felt like i had to keep my guard up in case she tried to swing on me. she took another minute, closed her eyes to breathe, then looked up at me. "i came here to hear what you have to say, then i'm gonna say what i have to say. if we come to an understanding then cool. if not, then that's also cool. however i am more than willing to be patient." she then gestured for me to speak.
i sighed and took a minute to rack my brain. i'm not even gon cap, i was tryna find a way to explain this without digging myself into an even further hole. sitting up, i exhaled and started to speak. "he came by looking for you. i told him you weren't home but not where you were, but he seemed kinda upset so i invited him in. one thing led to another... and you know the rest. i swear to you i didn't mean for it to happen. it was just in the moment and i've regretted it ever since. indie, i'm so sorry. if i could take it back i would. i know saying that don't mean much but still." i stopped and looked up at her. she looked down at her slides and fiddled with her nails.
"in my house... my house, jasmine? that's the one part i can't get over. you were in my house with my ex." she stopped and sighed. i watched as she balled her fist up, but then quickly released it. she did this about three times before she finally opened her mouth to speak again. "i'm not gon hold you though. that's too much damn energy."
i let out a sigh of relief. "india i can't even begin to-" she put her hand up.
"i- i'm not finished," she stuttered, "let me make one thing clear: you will stay away from rodrick. you claim it was a one time thing, but i saw the way you looked at him when momma dropped you off that one time. so unless you speaking to him at family functions, stay away. because i was nice this time, but next time i will strangle you. got it?" i nodded. she stood up and i kinda flinched. she smiled. "good. now give me a hug." i stood up and hugged her. she pulled away and looked towards cash's bedroom door. "cash, you can't come speak?" she yelled.
cash came out of his room and smiled. "hey sis." he engulfed her in a hug, but i could feel him staring me down while her back was turned. i tried to ignore it as they held a small conversation.
