I didn’t think about it, I didn’t really have to. Instead, I threw my jacket off, threw down my weapons and dove into the cold sea. Apparently, it really wanted to play. My arm burned, and I was sure that if it had scabbed over already that the scab was torn. The water swirled around me, and I couldn’t find the way to the top. Seconds later, my head popped out of the sea and I gasped. But I quickly remembered why I was in the water to begin with in the first place. I looked around, wildly searching for the curly haired boy.

The water was sloshing around, wrapping around my ankles while trying to pull me under. I large hand popped up above water before it was gone, but I had seen it in time. I dove under the water, opening my eyes and ignored the burn, glancing around for where Harry could have been. I saw a figure, squirming and fighting as it sunk down towards the depths of the sea. Instantly I knew it was Harry, who else could it be?

I reached him quickly, seeing the panicked look on his face. I quickly tore of his shirt, lessening the weight tugging him downwards, before reaching under his armpits and dragged him up towards the surface. My kicks didn’t take us as far with the added weight of Harry, and he continued to slip but we broke the surface soon enough. He gasped harshly for air, clinging to me like a kitten, and all I could do was chuckle and tread water with him in my grip. His hair was long when wet, clinging to his forehead, and around his wide terrified eyes. I kept my left arm wrapped tightly around his waist, my right going up to wipe the hair from his eyes gently. He shuddered, goosebumps raising on his skin as he dug his head into the crook of my neck. I didn’t blame him, this water was cold.

The butt of the ship was passing us now, a small rope ladder swinging against the side. I reached out to grab it, the ship going by slowly. I gently pushed Harry towards the ladder, watching the shaking boy climb up slowly while the ship dragged me along. His footing slipped once, but I reached forward, pushing him against the ship by his arse. I didn’t think he would yell at me, considering I’ve just saved him twice. The ladder swung against the side of the ship, and if there were marks then Harry would be the one to fix them. The pain in my arm distracted me from thoughts of my ship for a bit, shooting up and down my body as the skin pulled tight against my muscles as I climbed.

I tried to focus on my steps, keeping my breath stable as another wave dove against the ship soaking my back more while pushing me against the ship- thankfully not too badly that it caused my face to bash against it. I cringed as the salt water got in the wound again, but I figured that it was one way to prevent infection. So in a way, helping him was helping me. Not all pirates enjoyed being nasty and dirty all the time, despite popular belief. And I sure as hell did not enjoy a raging infection in my arm.

On the trek up I had only slipped once, and thankfully it had been very close to the bottom, so I hadn’t really fallen, more like slipped but stayed in the same place- not that anyone would have noticed.  Harry had reached the top, toppling over onto the deck. I could hear him hit the wood of the deck, leaving a hollow thump and I winced at how painful that sounded. I didn’t hear any of the crew address him, and I didn’t think anyone offered to help him out- probably very confused about the whole situation.
