Sherlock was pacing back and forth at the end of the bed. As soon as he noticed you were awake, he stopped and walked over to the chair beside your bed.
“How are you?”
“Awake,” you said. The painkillers were still working and the cast on your arm wasn’t the most uncomfortable thing ever. “You seem worse than me, have you slept?” There were bags under his eyes and he seemed anxious.
“Barely.”

Your frowned slightly. Sherlock knew the injuries weren’t life threatening, it was more the shock of the event. Outside of the broken arm and a few cracked ribs, you were fine. There was no concussion or major internal injuries. The worst of it was currently Sherlock’s reaction.

Which reminded you…

“Before the ambulance got here, you said something to me,” you started, not knowing where else to start. Maybe it would be best to get straight to the point. “You said you loved me. Did you mean it or were you just trying to make me feel better or make me calmer or something?”
Sherlock froze, staring at you. “A sudden declaration of love is not likely to calm you down.”
“That’s true,” you said slowly. It had been almost as much of a shock as being hit by an out of control car.

Sherlock stood and you motioned for him to sit on the edge of the bed. You reached for his hand with the arm that wasn’t restricted by a cast. He looked down at your hand and then placed his own in it, closing it around yours.
“I was planning on telling you in a more… typical fashion,” he started.
“So you meant it?” you asked and he nodded.
“I did.” You smiled at him. “I’m not prone to panicking and sentiment but when you said it hurt to breathe, I… admittedly, panicked.”

Sherlock paused and looked at you. Whatever he was expecting, a smile on your face was apparently not it. But, he smiled back.
“You know, no one’s going to believe me if I tell them that you panicked.”
“I have panicked before,” he pointed out and you shrugged.
“You haven’t panicked and confessed your love to someone before.”
“No…” he said slowly. “I haven’t.”

“It’s alright though,” you said softly. Just knowing that he had meant it made your heart soar despite the situation.
“It is?” He sounded confused for once and you chuckled. You had managed to confuse Sherlock Holmes.
“Yes, because I love you too.”

The door opened and John walked in with Mary close behind. She wasn’t too far from giving birth but she still somehow managed to look radiant. John froze as he turned to look at both of you. His eyes went from you to Sherlock and then to both of your hands with fingers intertwined.
“What have we just missed?”
“Nothing,” Sherlock said quickly and then realised that no one in the room believed him.
“Clearly,” muttered Mary.

“Correction, John, not as much as you think,” said Sherlock as he gently squeezed your hand. “Since you will witness one of the most important parts.”
“Oh, okay,” said John. Mary’s eyebrows were raised.
“(Y/n), I was going to ask when we were walking in the snow but I suppose now will have to do instead,” he said. “Would you like to go on a date with me?”
You laughed a little at Mary and John’s expressions before nodding. “Of course I will, Sherlock.”

“Well, that’s certainly not what I was expecting,” said John as he looked at Mary.
“It’s lovely,” she said. “Let’s just hope the date goes better than this.” You nodded in agreement and Sherlock froze up again, likely imagining what would happen if you were to be hurt on the date.
“Yes, hopefully,” agreed John as he nodded. “I think I need to get a cup of tea, anyone else want one?”
