Your eyes opened when you felt someone moving beside you. Opening your eyes, you could see Boromir heading towards the window.
“What are you doing?” you asked.
“The men will be leaving soon,” he said. Frowning, you let out a sigh. “You know I have to go. They will leave soon.”
“But they won’t leave without you,” you said. “You could just stay a while longer. It’s not even dawn yet and you don’t leave until midday.”

Boromir stared at you for a moment. Glancing at the wardrobe, he sighed. He should get ready but he couldn’t say no to your sad face.
“Only until dawn,” he said, looking out of the window. It was still dark outside and dawn was not for a few hours. “Or else Father will become angry again.”

“I’m still not fond of your father,” you admitted.
“He’s still your family now.”
“I chose you, Boromir. And Faramir is as much my little brother as he his yours but your father hates me as much as I hate him.”

“(Y/n), hate is such a strong word,” he said as he sat on the edge of the bed.
“I wish there were a stronger word,” you muttered.
“(Y/n), darling,” he said, smiling a little. “You cannot say things like that. He is at the very least my father.”
“Fine,” you conceded. “He dislikes me as much as I dislike him.”

Boromir pulled the blankets and furs over both of you as he lay next to you. You snuggled into him and felt him wrap his arm around your waist. Wishing he never had to leave, you rested your head on his chest.

“Come back alive,” you whispered as you listened to his heartbeat.
“I always do.”
“But what if one day you don’t.” Boromir kissed your forehead.
“If that day ever happens, it will be very, very far away,” he said.
“Promise me.”
“I promise, love,” he said. “I will come back alive.”

Satisfied, you closed your eyes and fell back to sleep in his arms. When you awoke again, you scrambled to get dressed and rushed to say goodbye to him. Before you left, you noticed your bracelet was left on the dresser. Grabbing it, you the proceeded to run down to where Faramir was wishing his brother luck.

“You weren’t going to leave without saying goodbye, were you?” you teased while watching him dismount his horse. You hugged and kissed and handed him the bracelet.
“Come back alive, promise?” you said, just like you had earlier in the morning.
“Promise,” he said, kissing you again.

Almost a year later was when Faramir found him. His body had many wounds from arrows. In his hands were a broken sword and your bracelet. You didn't care about your bracelet being returned. Boromir could keep it with him for an eternity, he could have lost it or sold it. It was replaceable, Boromir wasn't.

The promise had been broken.
