You stared at the book shop on the corner. Through the windows, you could see all of the old books. You loved old books, from their covers (in whatever condition) to their smell. You thought it was a bit weird at find but you realised that actually, it wasn't as weird as you though and other people liked the smell of old and books too.
After standing on the doorstep for probably far too long, you stepped inside and could hear a Queen song playing on an old record player. Smiling, you wander wondering around the store. The shelves were full of books, some with covers, some with part of the covers missing and some with no covers at all. Your fingers grazed over the spine of an early edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first of the three Lord of the Rings books.
"Can I help you?"
You jumped, not expecting anyone to talk to you.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry," said the man as he stepped towards you. He had white hair even though he didn't look that old and he was wearing white too. You wondered how he managed to keep his clothes so white, especially since he was in a store full of dusty old books. "I didn't mean to scare you."
"Oh, no, it's fine."The two of you just awkwardly looked at each other and smiled.
"Is there anything you're looking for?" he asked, adding a small gesture towards the many shelves and piles of books in the shop. "There is some sort of order."
"I was just looking, I just like old books but thank you for the offer," you said.
He smiled and nodded. "If you need me, just call."After thanking him again, he disappeared into the back of the store and let you keep browsing with the music in the background. Eventually, much to your dismay, you had to leave but you knew you'd go back whenever you had the free time.
After a few visits, you had brought a book and was searching for another which you simply couldn't find. You'd have to ask the owner about it.
"Excuse me," you said. You felt a little rude, disrupting whatever he was doing at his desk. "I was wondering if you had a book I was after, I can't find it anywhere."
He turned to you and smiled. "What book is it?"You told him the book and he searched through his records fairly quickly which told him him where the book was in the shop. He fetched it and you frowned when you realised you were five pounds short. Or, more accurately, the left over money wouldn't be enough to pay for your lunch. And you had to tell him that after all of the trouble he'd gone through to find the book.
"Not to worry," he said with a grin. "I'll use my staff discount and now you'll have the right amount."
"You're the only person who works here," you said, laughing a little. Every time you came here, you only ever saw him working, you were fairly certain he owned the place.
"So I am," he said. The two of you ended up just looking at each other for a moment, like you had done before.
"Would you care to join me for a spot of lunch?" he asked with a hopeful smile.
"I'd like that," you said while nodding. "My name is (Y/n), by the way."
"Aziraphale."
