She could see it, couldn't shake it off. That image that she had tried so fucking hard to bury deep within her subconscious, kept trying to surface out, taunting her cynically during her sleep.
Rya woke up sharply, unaware of her surroundings, or anything else for that matter. Her hair stuck to her forehead completly coated in perspiration that rolled in small droplets down the side of her face. The heavy inhales and exhales that escaped out of her mouth made her ribs ache in protest. The pain of them grounding her, making her remember suddenly that she was at home.
She was safe.
Rya hastily climbed out of her queen sized bed, not before pulling the thick comforter off of her legs so that she could be free to go up to her balcony. Her safe space.
She breathed out the night air of the city of London, rejoycing in the small wind that made her cool off a bit. She wiped the cold perspiration off of her temples and looked out at the invisible stars in the sky.
It reminded her of Mira, of that conversation she had had with her slightly tipsy mother under those invisible stars.
"Why can't we see the stars mum? Aren't they meant to shine in the night to illuminate the sky?" She had asked innocently.
Her mother had breathed out a deep sigh, but stayed quiet, seeming to think hard about what she could say. It made little Rya look back at her, her small eyebrows pinched in confusion before they relaxed when she heard her mother's voice again.
"The stars... they're still shinning, they always shine. But, right now, there is too much pollution in the air for you to able to see them. The pollution acts like a mask for them, making them hide behind it."
"But why mum?" Rya had persisted, not understanding why she couldn't see her beloved stars.
"I think that we hurt the earth far too much, it got sick because of it. Our little earth was hurt so much that as a result it started slowly dying. And because of that, because of her sickness, we aren't able to see the stars anymore." Mira paused for a bit, remembering that she was talking to a ten year old child.
"Think of it as the earth passing through a fog, because of it, its vision is hazy and it's not able to see things when they're very far. Pollution is the same thing." She had then explained, and as she looked at her daughter, she had seen tears in her eyes that made her frown.
"Hey Rya, what did I say about crying eh?" Mira reprimanded.
"It makes you look weak. Sorry." She muttered, rubbing the palm of her small hands on her eyes, erasing any trace of tears.
