Diana couldn't keep the stress out of her head despite the fact that she had nothing to stress about.
Guards? Check.
Daryl? Flanked by loyalists on every side.
Herself? Completely guarded.
It should by all means be an opportunity for Diana to actually enjoy the elegant party, When was the last time she ever truly enjoyed something to the fullest without worrying about politics? She'd been fighting a constant battle ever since the death of the previous queen and her mother. That day she could not squander and had to grow up, less she end up "Mysteriously" dead.

But that possibility was far away for now, until later. Diana didn't worry about herself, she worried about you.
The knight who so adoringly got her out of the dragon's clutches, asking nothing in return thanks to your genuine benevolence. Now amongst a pack of rats while you happily ate the cake you were given with some other foods.
No food testers, no guards keeping an eye out beyond the occasional glance towards your direction, decked in armor that Diana still couldn't believe you used to survive the dragon's onslaught. You were by all means the perfect easy target, Your energy so different from everyone else in the room.

You were so reckless. Most likely thanks to a life devoid of politics, Diana couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy. How a part of her wished she was born in a time and place where she wouldn't be burdened by the constant danger of royal life.
Anyone could kill you right now, as long as Diana didn't keep an eye out for you. No doubt her aunt's goons would have a grudge for the person who foiled their plans. Her informants even told her of one of the more sleazy types around here offering to clean your armor with a magic potion, thankfully for the same reason that the armor still looked so mediocre in its quality you refused to offer. Guards intervening when the sleazebag got too confident.

But...why was she so worried about you? You were just another servant of hers, of thousands of others in the land. What made you special beyond you saving her, because that didn't drive her to you at all.
Yes something drove her. Gratitude? No, she didn't even trust him. Even now when his naivety becomes the truth evermore. Compensation? When did duty have to be compensated?

Then it clicked. It was your innocence.
Despite the hardships you must've faced in your journey, despite the backlash from others and even her you keep that smile on your face. Seamlessly enjoying life while doing things for others gladly, no matter how crazy the task.
She wanted to protect that innocence, it was something so precious. Taken from herself too soon. She'd hate to see it snuff out once again, whether by emotion or body.

But...she had more important things to take care of...greater things then a person. She wasn't your mother, she was your princess. Soon to be Queen, she'd still have an obligation to serve the country and its people but...not this...close.

"This is really lovely, you know?"
Diana snapped out of her thoughts, how long had she been in that state? She lost track of you, you could've been killed-!
No Diana, he is just another citizen...nothing more.
"Princess? You ok?"
You entered her vision, slight concern painted as you're eating was slower then just now.
"Y-Yes I'm fine, I was just...thinking about royal duties, now that I'm back."

And like every other lie you accepted it immediately.
"Ah right! Just make sure to not overwork yourself, This is a place to enjoy!"
Such casualness, it almost didn't seem like you cared who she was if it wasn't for your undying respect (Or did you just respect everyone?), Diana...liked it. She may not worry about you anymore after this would be over but in the meantime she was; she could enjoy your fresh company.

And just like that everything was back to the same a day later, you were gone back to your village after the party and Diana was back on her rightful place. Well not everything was the same; this latest mess has brought Diana finally close enough to finally finish her master plan, soon she would purge the last bit of excess and she and her country would be way more saver. And it wouldn't be soon before she would be crowned. Then true change could happen.
