Gintoki was sent back to the past.
This was not related to the previous chapter. Gintoki was not even aware that he was in a time travel incident until later in this story, but it was a freakish incident to him nevertheless.
He was walking out of the bedroom to get some water at night, still in his sleepwear, eyes hardly opened, one hand scratching his belly and the other ruffling his hair, when he found himself in the middle of a...
... bamboo forest.
A bamboo forest covered in thick snow on a slope of a hill. Bright sun shining on the sky. Birds chirping and a small mountain road in the distance.
Gintoki looked behind to find no trace of his bedroom, or the whole apartment. It was just bamboo and bamboo in the snow, and the sun over the head, and the bird chirping, and the mountain road.
"What the actual f—"
Rubbing his temples, the perm head worked his memory intensely to see what he did wrong. Did he get too drunk and end up in a weird place? Was this another prank by the brats? He clearly remembered opening the door of his bedroom though? Plus, it couldn't be winter this time of the year...?
"HELP! HEEELP! ANYONEEE! HEEEEELP!!!"
Gintoki picked up the direction and it took him less than a second to start running. Although he didn't fully grasp the situation, the urgency in that scream left him no other choice.
It led him to a stream running along the mountain. On the outlook, the current did not seem that strong, but danger was often invisible to the eyes. The young kid that were being swept away either didn't learn that lesson well enough or was accidentally pushed by his friends who were running along and crying for help.
Gintoki couldn't swim, so jumping into the water was not an option, but if there was something to be a stepping stone—
The high heaven decided the kid shouldn't die today because Gintoki spotted a dead tree log stuck between the boulders and extended out to the middle. It was not long enough to reach the boy, but good enough for the Yorozuya boss.
He ran on barefoot not minding the sharp rocks that cut into his feet. His action was instant, decisive, and inhumanly fast when he made the jump from the bank to the dead wood log. He knew full well it was not safe to stand on it and he didn't intend to. As perfectly calculated, the drowning kid was swept right across Gintoki when he just landed on the log. He immediately executed another jump which crumbled the wet wood, with his hand grabbing the kid out of the strong current, and flung both of them to the other bank.
The other kids watching from afar was at awe as they couldn't believe their eyes. They all halted their steps as the silver hair man effortlessly threw their friend on the ground, but he himself felt into the water body.
Gintoki had miscalculated by an inch.
"ACK—!!!"
But luckily he was not a small kid and his strong arms were able to grasp a boulder. Slipping a few times due to the mossy surface, Gintoki shuddered when got out and the winter blasted at his wet form. Despite so, he dashed to the frail kid, who was covered in bruise and small injuries from being thrown at the rough surface, but it was not like Gintoki had a choice.
The moment the boy was flipped over, he spurt out water and coughed intensely. That was a good sign as no water was blocking his airway and he could soon breath normally. Once he did, the boy bawled his eyes out and shook up like a newborn baby with seizure.
