. . .

Karter had a sprained ankle and had to try and stay off of it for some time. While we were at the hospital dad had me get my knuckles checked out too. They were better, they didn't need to be wrapped up anymore but we're still bruised. I just wasn't allowed to hit anything for some time.

. . .

We got home a little while ago and me and Karter were continuing our movie from last night, the one we fell asleep watching. When the doorbell rang I was going to get up to get it, but dad came out of his office to get the door. Guess he wasn't streaming today.

I heard some chatter coming from the front door but couldn't understand what they were saying. Suddenly the tv got quieter. I looked to my left to see Karter with the remote in their hand turning the volume down. When they noticed me looking at them they smiled at me. I smiled back. "Thanks." I whispered.

I silently got off the couch and tiptoed closer to the front door hiding behind the wall. If it was someone he knew he would have let them in. And why is he trying to talk so quietly?

"I don't know you."

"How did you get our address?"

"I'm not lying..."

The front door closed startling me.

Karter was watching me from the couch. I put a finger to my mouth saying to remain silent. I peeked around the wall and didn't see dad in the house anymore. I could just barely see through the window next to the door. Dad was outside talking to someone, no way was I going to hear them now.

I walked back to the couch and slumped down in defeat. Karter looked at me confused. "I couldn't hear, and he went outside." I huffed.

We continued watching the movie, and I slowly started to forget about what happened earlier. That was until the door opened again.

There was the sound of footsteps entering the house and more than just one pair. I quickly grabbed the remote between me and Karter and paired the movie.

First dad entered the room. Then a lady that looked somewhat familiar entered behind him.

Dad sat down next to me on the couch and the other person sat down in a chair next to Karter. Dad cheated him through and said. "This is Ms. Ken." That name sounded familiar.

I looked over at Karter who was staring at the lady with wide eyes. "Nice to see you to Karter." She smiled suffering Karter's hair slightly.

"Arnt you our new school nurse?" I asked surprised.

She looked at me and smiled. "That's me." Then she looked confused for a second. "Arnt you Alex?"

"Yeah, why?" I asked confused back. Then she smiled again. "Well, I support you." "Thanks." I mumbled crossing my arms over my chest.

How could I be so stupid?! We'll I knew I didn't have it on when I went to sleep. But I didn't have to on to the hospital! How could I forget? Was it because I was worried about Karter too much I forgot? No, don't blame them. But they saw! And now the more saw and knows too! At least she doesn't mind?

"Hey, Alex can I talk to you for a second?" Dad asked snapping le out of my thoughts. I need my head and followed him to his office. When he closed the door the first thing he said was. "Are you alright?" "Why didn't you tell me?" I asked back. "I thought you wanted a break today," Dad replied. "I can't believe I forgot it." I sat in Dad's chair and pulled my knees up to my chest. "Would you like me to go get it?" I heard dad ask. I nodded my head then rested it on my knees. I heard the sound of his office door clicking open then closing.

It was quiet. Usually, his computer would be on, but asleep, and now it's not. It powered of all the way, so there's no fan running in the background. Just silence. I could sort of hear the sound of dad walking up the stairs. And just barely here faint mummers coming from the living room.

I wonder what they were talking about. Maybe Karter's back again? Is that why she came over? To check upon them? No, Karter went to the hospital they're better now. Then how did she know where we lived? She didn't come for me since she didn't recognize me, I think. Then how did she know Karter was here?

The door to the office clicks open. I lift my head from my knees and see dad standing in the doorway holding me under for me.

I get up and hug him. "Thanks, dad." Dad hugs them back. "No problem, son."

I take my binder from him. "Now get out." I say, lightly shoving him out of the room. Dad chuckles at me then closes the door behind him.

.   .   .

I look at myself in the reflection of Dad's work/gaming computer. I pat my chest and smile. Perfect.

I open the door to Dad's office to leave but am toped my dad coming in when I open the door. He quickly closes the door behind him. He turns to me and says. "We have to stay in here for a bit."

"Why? Is Karter alright?" I quickly ask on instinct. "Karter's fine." Dad holds his hand out in front of me. "Ms. Ken is talking to Karter right now." "Why?" I ask instantly.

Dad looks at me worldly.

"Well...

...she wants to adopt them?"
