After dinner, we all gather around the planned bonfire, reminiscing on our favourite parts of the trip. Jace liked playing baseball, and so did Ben and Austin. Sarah loved the Aquarium, and Bree the girl's day we had. I like a little bit of every day, except the night of the club, of course.
"You know what, we should make this a yearly thing" Bree suggests. "No matter how hectic or complicated our lives get, we can all meet here at about the same time of the year and come together."
Even though her proposition is unlikely, I like the idea. It'll become even harder to find time to get together when we all start working after college. "That sounds amazing" I say, wanting to encourage her. I feel flattered by her suggestions. It's a big compliment to me, when someone wants you to be around for life.
"Let's cheers. To family" Austin says, and we all happily agree. That's exactly what we are.
"To family" we repeat, bringing our glasses of wine and water together over the fire. Everyone breaks out into conversation, when I get up to head inside. I've looked forward to this all evening, so I walk up to the guitar in the living room and bring it out to the others.
"I think you owe us something" I say, smiling big towards Jace. Everyone else looks just as excited as me, when he grabs the guitar out of my hand. He starts playing seconds after all of us have gotten comfortable in our chairs again. I close my eyes for a brief second and listen to the pleasant melody playing in the background. Taking in the music, the ocean breeze and the fresh air, I feel a wave of peace rushing through me. I love moments like these, when everything feels like it's going to be okay for a change.
Jace stops playing after a few minutes. "Alright, that's all I have in me today" he smirks, placing the guitar next to him. Everyone gives him a little applause, before getting back to their own conversations. I remember our drive home tomorrow, and I know that my inner peace is gone again. A quick wave of panic rushes through me, before Jace places his hand on mine. "You okay?" he asks me quietly, so the others won't hear.
I nod my head back at him and push the negative thoughts to the back of my head. "You're too far away from me" he adds, placing his hand under the chair to pull me closer effortlessly. His action brings a smile to my face, and I let my head fall onto his shoulder.
"Alright guys, we're off to bed" Austin says, pulling Bree up from the chair with him.
"Yeah, so are we" Sarah says, looking for Ben to come with her.
"Alright, we'll put the fire out in a second" Jace says, as everyone is grabbing their glasses to bring them inside.
"You sure?" Austin says, checking with his best friend.
"Of course" Jace answers, nodding at him.
"Thank you guys. Good night. See you in the morning" Bree says, and the others agree with her.
