A New World (Shadow x Reader)

Chapter 24: Gone?

It's been 3 days since anyone had seen Shadow. Since then, G.U.N ordered me to stay away from work because of the whole mess. Scourge was actually taken to a hospital but he's fortunately okay.

The others have been looking everywhere for
Shadow. But no one can seem to find him. Rogue even went all the way to his cave, and he wasn't there! He could honestly be anywhere on Mobias right now...and I can't believe I'm actually worried.

I know Shadow and I aren't usually one to get along. But there have been times where Shadow would actually treat me like a decent human being, and I knew deep down he had a kind heart, I just think he puts a wall up cause he's scared.

Anyways, some of the Freedom Fighter's went on a search for Shadow, but for some reason Sonic stayed back here with me. I felt a bit awkward because I still wasn't quite used to all of them but if I were to pick, I was probably closest to Sonic and Shadow.

"Aren't you going to look for Shadow?" I raised a brow as Sonic settled down onto the couch.

"Nope. I know Shadz. If he wants to come back he will." Sonic hummed. I mean, that was reasonable. The two had known each other for a while even though they considered each other rivals. I guess over time they eventually learned things about each other.

"Okay. I'm going to go for a walk." As I was about to turn around I heard shuffling from behind me.

"Can I come with?" Said Sonic. As he placed a hand on my shoulder. Admittedly, I would rather be alone to think but I couldn't really say no.

"Sure."

With that, the two of us calmly went side by side as we approached the beach and walked near the water.

At first, it was mostly small talk. I was just learning more things about Mobias and such but eventually Sonic and I found ourselves in a deep talk as we continued on.

"Do you miss Earth?"

"Of course I do!" I looked to see Sonic's slightly saddened face and sighed, "But maybe I belong here." Sonic's frowned disappeared as he gave me his typical smirk.

"Say Y/N, did ya really think Ames and I were together?" Sonic chuckled. I blushed in embarrassment as I remembered the conversation with the pink hedgehog on the beach.

"Well, she certainly acts like it." Sonic and I laughed as we remembered Amy's crazy antics and attempts to win Sonic's heart.

"You're a pretty cool friend, Y/N." The blue hedgehog beside me grinned. I couldn't help but smile back.

"Likewise."

I don't really know how, but Sonic and I slowly started leaning in closer towards each other. I couldn't help but adore his emerald eyes as our faces were nearing.

"Am I interrupting something?"

The two of us turned our backs only to be met by the very hedgehog that had went missing. His tone was rather cold and harsh but I wasn't surprised. He was probably still mad about the thing with Scourge.

Sonic and I pulled away from each other as we avoided eye contact. I couldn't help but notice Shadow's glare but I didn't understand why it was directed at Sonic.

"Shadow! Where have you been?" Sonic yelped. Shadow simply rolled his eyes as he folded his arms over his chest.

He seemed to be analyzing Sonic and I's current predicament. His ruby eyes looked both Sonic and I's figures up and down and shook his head in disapproval.

"Were you two on a...date?" I could tell Shadow nearly gagged at the question. He spat out the last part in disgust as he narrowed his eyes. I looked back at Sonic who just rubbed his neck awkwardly. Sighing, I knew I had to clear this up.

"No, Shadow. I just was taking a walk and Sonic joined me."

"Hmph."

As expected, he was grumpy. Sonic was awkwardly gazing at the sand which confused me. Did he really believe this was a date? I thought we were just hanging out like friends would, is this not something hedgehogs usually do?? Better yet, did the Sonic the hedgehog have a crush on me?!

"Um, anyways, are you going to come back with us?" I uncomfortably shifted as I broke the seemingly tense silence.

"Depends if faker is gonna hang around." Shadow hissed. I was taken back by his sudden aggression but Sonic seemed unfazed.

"Take a chill pill, Shadz. We were just talking."

I didn't really understand what they were arguing about, but I felt like there was a deeper meaning to it.

"Tsch, didn't look like it."

"Can we just go? The others have been worried about you." I tried to break the tension between the two, although it seemed impossible.

Emerald and ruby stared at each other. Both eyes squinted and daggered. I really didn't get why they were both acting like this. I mean, it's relatively normal for Shadow but what was his problem with Sonic?

I knew these two had a rivalry but right now it seemed like much more than that. As if they were going to go at each other's throats any moment now. Especially Shadow.

"Whatever." With that, Shadow chaos controlled away to hopefully the shack. Sonic and I exchanged looks but his was rather stern as mine remained confused.

"What's wrong with Shadow?"

"It's not my place to tell." Sonic sighed. I raised a brow but didn't push any further. It would only infuriate Shadow more.

Silently, Sonic and I walked back from the beach and towards the shack. Hoping to meet those flaming ruby eyes once again.

Sonic called the others and told them about how we met with Shadow. They each didn't hesitate to rush back home, some to greet him, some to question about the mission.

I had different intentions however. I was more curious about the way he treated Sonic. He clearly did nothing wrong and I wanted to know why Shadow was so angry. He hadn't even seen him in days!

I decided as soon as I was alone with Shadow again. I would profusely ask questions. Why he left, why he got so defensive, and about this rivalry. I wanted answers and I was going to get them.
