i painted myself for you
a trophy wife
who hid her rainbow
that you had such a distaste for
i feared your god
i kept my hair blonde
because you liked it that way
i never let a curse escape my lips
i never played the songs you hated

but now
i destroyed that painting
and i bleed what's underneath
colors i felt had disintegrated within me
and buried themselves under the surface
now reappear more iridescent than ever

now
i am the person i always pretended i wasn't
for your sake
since i learned
i will never alter myself
for someone's approval
ever again.
