Chapter 5
"So, Professor Xavier, you think May should go to your school?" Prof. X had come to my house, and was talking with my parents.
"I think she should come if she wants to. She isn't a mutant, but it would be a good chance for her to meet some people with powers who are her own age. I know right now she isn't paying much attention in school. She's too busy being Spidergirl. At my school, we could help her finish school early, so she can finish college early, and focus completely on being a hero, as she wants to." Wow. It was almost like he could... Oh yeah. He could read minds.
"This is a big decision."
<May? Why don't you come in here?>
I jumped down from the wall where I had been hanging. Before I hit the wall, I shot a web and swung through the open window.
"Mom, Dad, Prof. X is right. I think I would like to go. If I don't like it, or it's not working out, I can always come home. And I get to visit on the weekends. We can still go out together, Dad."
Dad sighed. "Okay, we'll try it. But is there any way not to tell who I am?"
"Peter, it wouldn't matter. My school is probably one of the safest places in the world. And the X-Men don't treat people's secrets like garbage. No one will tell."
"But this is crazy! May isn't a mutant! And she's doing fine at school here. She can't leave-"
"MJ, May is sixteen." Dad broke in, "I'm sure she can decide for herself." Dad gave Mom a look.
"You want to go, May?" Mom asked reluctantly.
"I want to try it, yes."
"Then go pack your bags. We'll take you tomorrow." I think I saw a tear in my mom's eye. I gave her a hug, and ran upstairs.
The next day:
"May, are you sure you want to do this? We can take you home right now." Mom said, yet again. Like she had been doing for the whole ride up here.
"May? I'm Ororo Munroe, but you can call me Storm. I'll show you to you room."
"Bye, May. See you Saturday." Mom gave me a kiss, and Dad hugged me. I felt nervous. I was really here. In the school for superheros. I hugged both my parents. "See you later."
I followed her upstairs, past doors and doors, until we got to one marked '25'. "This is your room. The professor will call you to his office later. For now, get settled in."
Storm left, her silvery hair flying around her. I looked at my room. The walls were sort of off-white, and the floor and ceiling were a dark wood. As for furniture, there was a twin sized bed, a dark wooden nightstand, and a big wooden dresser, and a desk with a computer on it. Overall, it looked a little fancy, and very comfortable. I unpacked my clothes, shoving them randomly into my drawers, just like they were at home. The last thing in my bag was the spider-suit. I tucked it into the far corner of the top drawer.
I set the few pictures I brought on the nightstand, and I put my stuffed horse on my pillow. I'd had her since I was six, and it showed. Her brown fur was soft with age, and her head and legs flopped every-which-way. Chocolate looked mournfully out at the room, and I imagined her to be saying "Why did you take me off my nice old shelf? I liked it up there."
"Sorry, old girl," I whispered softly, "I wanted to bring a bit of home."
<May? Would you come to my office?> Prof. X whispered in my mind. A quick floor plan was uploaded into my brain, and I followed it to his office.
