It's a busy day at the Colitz Karinderya¹. Maya opens her lunch box and starts eating.

Noel dabs a bit of Adobo sauce onto his plate of rice. "Gutom na kaayo uy. Bahala na to si JR. Langayan kaayo." He promptly shuts his eyes and says a silent prayer. He quickly makes the sign of the cross and begins to eat.

"I'M SO HUNGRY. I CAN'T WAIT FOR JR MUCH LONGER. SUCH A SLOWPOKE."

Maya quietly looks at Noel as he eats. "Noel..."

"Hmm?" he says, his lips shiny with grease.

"Adto ta atong showcase sa HE karong Friday."

"WHAT IF WE WENT TO THE H.E. SHOWCASE THIS FRIDAY?

Noel's eyebrows crease. "Abi nakog dili ka muadto."

"I THOUGHT YOU DIDN'T WANT TO GO."

"Wala lang. Basig lingaw diay siya. Ako pud gihuna-huna tong giingon nila sailor moon. Mga bag-o pa baya ta aning school. Basig daghan pud tag ma meet didto."

"I DON'T KNOW. MAYBE IT COULD BE FUN. I ALSO WAS THINKING ABOUT WHAT SAILOR MOON SAID. WE'RE STILL NEW TO THE SCHOOL. MAYBE WE COULD SOCIALIZE WITH PEOPLE THERE."

"Hmm. Ambot lang. Murag boring man siya uy," Noel says, almost not understandable with his mouth still chewing food.

"HMM. I DON'T KNOW. IT SOUNDS BORING."

"Sige na. Ako na ang bahala sa imong entrance fee."

"LET'S JUST GO. I'LL PAY FOR YOUR ENTRANCE FEE."

Noel continues to chew his food as he thinks. "Okay sige. Pero ubanon nato si JR sa overnight nato sa Samal²."

"FINE. BUT JR'S COMING WITH US THIS WEEKEND TO SAMAL."

Maya dips her hotdog in soy sauce. She takes a bite off it. "Pero...ngano man?"

"BUT...WHY?"

"Wala lang. Luoy baya to si JR no kay ilahang sitwasyon sa balay. Wala lang na siya'y ginaingon pero daghan kaayo na siya'g ginahunahuna. Para lang malipay pud siya ba."

"NOTHING SPECIAL. IT'S JUST JR...YOU KNOW HIS HOME LIFE. HE DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING BUT I KNOW HE HAS A LOT OF THINGS GOING ON IN HIS HEAD. I JUST WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO CHEER HIM UP."

Maya exhales. "Sige. Pero kato ha, showcase karong Friday."

"OKAY. BUT THE SHOWCASE THIS FRIDAY, OKAY? DON'T FORGET."

Noel smiles and pumps his fist. "Okay, ingnon nako sa JR pag-abot niya dinhe."

"OKAY. I'LL TELL JR WHEN HE GETS HERE."

"Unsang JR?" He arrives and puts down his backpack on the empty chair beside Maya. "Unsa diay?" He takes out some utensils and his lunchbox.

"JR?"

"WHAT IS IT?"

"Kuan, ubanon ka namo sa overnight namo sa Samal karong weekend," Noel says.

"ERM...WE WERE THINKING OF BRINGING YOU ALONG WITH US FOR SAMAL THIS WEEKEND."

JR's face lights up as he takes a seat next to Noel. "Sure?"

Both Maya and Noel nod. JR, in his excitement, hugs Noel and then Maya.

Maya pulls away and meets JR's eyes. "Pero kato, ubanan dapat ko ni Noel sa showcase karong Friday."

"BUT IN RETURN, NOEL HAS TO GO WITH ME TO THE H.E. SHOWCASE THIS FRIDAY."

"Karong Friday? Unsang orasa?" JR asks.

"THIS FRIDAY? WHAT TIME?"

Maya looks at Noel. "4:30 sa hapon," she says.

"AT 4:30 IN THE AFTERNOON."

"Hala. Murag naa ta'y practice ana bai³," JR checks his phone. "Awa oh." He shows Noel his phone. "Drum and Lyre practice at Panabo City⁴ park. 2PM to 6PM. Attendance is a must."

"OH NO. I THINK WE HAVE A PRACTICE THAT DAY, BAI."

"SEE?"

"Nganong sa Panabo?" Noel asks.

"WHY PANABO?"

"Ambot. Murag naingon man to niya nga murag gusto niya ug surprise daw sa tanan."

"I DON'T KNOW. I THINK HE MENTIONED THAT IT'S BECAUSE HE WANTS IT TO BE A SURPRISE."

Noel looks at Maya who is now clearly annoyed. "Babe. Sorry. Nakalimot gyud ko nga practice diay namo ana. Last week pa man gud na naka schedule. Sorry kaayo, babe."

"BABE. SORRY. I TOTALLY FORGOT THAT WE WERE GOING TO PRACTICE ON FRIDAY. WE WERE TOLD LAST WEEK SO....I FORGOT. I'M SO SORRY."

Maya doesn't respond. She just quietly eats her lunch.

Noel and JR look at each other. JR shrugs.

"Babe," Noel says again. No response. "Ayaw ana, Maya."

"DON'T BE LIKE THAT, MAYA."

Still no response. Unable to do anything about it, Noel just continues to eat his lunch.

1: KARINDERYA (or Carinderia): a local eatery selling and serving and viands. It is also called "turo-turo". It's an affordable way for Filipino citizens to eat.

2: SAMAL or officially, Island Garden City of Samal, is known as the largest resort city in the Philippines since it's home to more than 30 resorts with over 1,000 rooms. It is also part of the Davao del Norte province in which Carmen is also a part of. It's usually an hour drive away from where Carmen is. You'd have to go to Davao City and then ride a barge that will get you to the Island.

3: BAI (Read as bye) is a Binisaya term you use with your friends. It was initially used for males only but now, you can use it for everyone. It's English equivalent is 'dude' or 'bro'.

4: PANABO CITY is a city just next to Carmen. It's actually one of the cities amalgamated with this fictional Carmen but it still works. It's just a few kilometers away.
