Lord Diavolo left the castle for a walk without telling Barbatos. Not that it would make much of a difference, since Barbatos knew him well enough to predict his every move and intention.

While he appreciated this devoted care, it became a bit suffocating at times. But it wasn't really Barbatos that upset him. It was being stuck in an isolated castle his whole life. There were days where he didn't want to be attended to at every corner; He wanted fresh air. And what better time to go on a walk than on a rainy day?

The temperate November wind swept the ends of his raincoat and scarf up behind him as he strode through wet, thickening mud. The combination of mud on his boots and water droplets on his lashes sparked a sense of adventure in him, and he felt quite giddy over it.

He happily jumped in puddles when he found any, sending dirty water splashing around. He picked up the husks of plant pods to see if any held seeds in them. If they did, he threw them to the wind to help spread the growth of new flora. He stopped in his tracks whenever he saw animals, and carefully tip-toed around them to prevent causing any startles or fusses. He wanted the creatures to enjoy their walks as much as he did his own.

When he made his way into the nearby forest, he touched the trunks of trees, regardless of if they were cursed or not. He could feel magic radiating from them, in the same way one can feel the attraction between two magnets held close together in their hands. Some of the magic was warm, and others cold. One tree sent a jolt up his arm, and another made his muscles completely relax. In the past, he cursed himself on a particularly old and strong tree. Even though he couldn't use paper or wood products for a week, he found it to be a worthwhile experience. The trees were alive as he was, and he loved it all.

He kept careful watch of the ground which he walked, making sure not to inadvertently step on any small animal or plant. And thank goodness for that, because it lead him to finding a tiny crawl of movement upon a leaf.

He slowly knelt with his hands on the dirty grass, making himself eye-level with a fluffy caterpillar. Recognizing that it was a barbed and venomous species, he backed away a bit; But not by much.

He found the smallness of animals in comparison to himself to be remarkable. Their world was so different than his. For instance, it took much longer for a caterpillar to eat a leaf than it would for him. He thought of how scary it must be to worry about being trampled, or being picked off for some bird's breakfast. The bug lived in a world incomprehensibly larger than itself, but it found ways to live and be content with it anyway. He pondered if caterpillars cared for constellations. He wondered if it could even see the sky.

When he next spoke, it was in a voice so soft and gentle, as to not disturb the majesty of the place. "I wish you well on your metamorphosis."

When he stood again, he recognized that he was lost. He stared up, the ever-dark sky obscured by whispering leaves. He looked behind himself, and in front, and in every direction he could; but it all looked the same: trees, trees, and more trees. He thought that he spotted a puddle he had jumped in earlier, but when he put a foot in to test it, it sunk in all the way up to the top of his boot.

Being lost didn't bother him in the slightest. It meant room for new moments and discoveries! So he tromped along, picking a direction to go and awaiting to find where it would take him.
