Everything seemed like a normal morning of classes until the security guard who was at the boarding school to look after Victoria interrupted the classes to take her away.
—I regret to inform you that Her Majesty is very ill and has requested the whole family at Balmoral— said Rob and the teenager froze.
—I need to get some things from my room— she said urgently as she wanted her phone to call her father.
—All right, but hurry up— she replied and the princess ran off without a care in the world for the: "No running" signs all over the corridors.
11:20 a.m.
The teenager arrived at the castle where she summered every year. Her tummy was tingling and her hands were sweaty with nerves. Something inside her told her that everything was going to change from that day on.Her father was waiting for her at the entrance to the castle with a look on his face that sent a shiver down her spine.
—Is she awake?— asked Victoria fearfully after giving each other a much needed hug. William nodded.
—She wants to see you— he informed and the brunette nodded.
The palace used to be quite noisy, but that day it was quiet, you could notice the little light coming in and the serious faces of those present.
They entered the room of The Queen, who was lying on the bed, though slightly bent over thanks to the cushions that supported her back and head. Her only daughter was at her side holding her hand.
—Come here my dear— she said in a very thin voice, almost in a whisper.
—Gran-Gran— she whispered coming closer with tears rolling down from her eyes. She was as pale as the colour of snow, every bone in her face was visible and there were bruises all over her body.
—Don't cry— she wiped the tears away as best she could, —Will you leave us alone?— Elizabeth asked, though it sounded like an affirmation. Anna nodded, leaving a kiss on her mother's left cheek and a kiss on Victoria's forehead.
—I see you now sweetheart— said William giving his first born a hug and a kiss on the head.
—I'm so proud of you— the woman began to say, "I'm sure you'll be a great queen one day," she continued and the chestnut's tears were rolling unceasingly from her eyes.
—I'm afraid— she confessed between sobs.
—What are you afraid of, my dear?— she asked so calmly that it would seem untrue that she was ill.
—Not being good enough— she answered, ducking her head.
—You are too young yet. When the time comes you will know what to do. It won't be easy. But I am sure you will do well— she comforted him and those words touched the princess's heart.
20:00 p.m.
The Queen had died a few hours ago, making Victoria's grandfather the new King and her second in line. The teenage girl found herself crying on her father's shoulder, who could only pat her back as he was just as devastated.
—Harry— Charles said as he saw the red-haired boy appear through the door. William swallowed hard and pulled his daughter tighter into his embrace, trying to protect her. But it was to no avail as she broke away from her father and went straight to her uncle for a big hug. They had always been thick as thieves.
—I've missed you so much— Victoria murmured into his chest.
—You've grown up a lot since the last time— he replied nostalgically, since the last time he had seen her she was a child and had grown into a teenager.
—You're still exactly the same— joked his niece, which made them both laugh.
—Kika, we have to go home— said her father using the nickname he had given her as a child (which she hated) as he stood behind her.
—To Kensington?— she asked quizzically to which the man nodded, —What about my classes?— she said worriedly.
—You'll be back on Monday— he replied uncomfortably. The chestnut nodded and gave her uncle one last hug, hoping to see him again. She knew that things between him and her father were not too good so they left the palace without another word.
—Papa— called the teenager after more than half an hour of driving in which only the breathing of both could be heard. —What are we going to do now?— she asked with fear in her voice and tears on the verge of spilling over as she looked at her father who was staring at the road.
—Grandfather will send us his speech tomorrow morning where he will decide our new titles— he replied calmly, looking away from the asphalt to look at his daughter who nodded her head and all was silent again. —Don't worry about anything. Everything will be fine— said William, placing his hand on Victoria's thigh, who smiled at him.
The night was difficult for the whole family. The princess could only toss and turn in bed trying to sleep but her brain seemed to fill her with memories that made her cry. While her parents tossed and turned in the living room talking about their new life and how they would cope with it.
The teenager decided to go down to the kitchen to get some water as she thought it would help her sleep, but she realised that she could hear her parents' conversation from the stairs so she leaned against the wall listening intently.
—As of tomorrow everything will change— said William, sitting down next to his wife —Vic will have many more responsibilities. She is now second in the line of succession and people expect a lot from her— continued the man, which sent a shiver through his daughter's body.
—She'll be fine. She is no longer a little girl, she knows what she has to do and what she is preparing for— answered her mother, leaning her head on the prince's shoulder, who thought about what her daughter would be like as queen and smiled.
—She will make a good queen— she said and Kate nodded with a smile.
After that Victoria decided to go back to bed to reflect on her parents' words, but she fell asleep almost instantly.
