The months after the funeral were very difficult for the family; William and Catherine had never been able to be the same again. The woman spent most of her time in bed, mourning the death of her daughter. The man, meanwhile, drowned all his sorrows in alcohol. And although he tried to stay sober and pretend they were fine, everyone could see the pain in his eyes,
Most of his events were cancelled, except for the most important ones. The whole country understood their rest and sent them their support.
In the mornings, the alarm clock went off at six o'clock sharp, as they had to take their children to school.
—Good morning— said William, giving his wife a little kiss on the lips.
—Good morning.
Although things between the two of them were not going well, they always tried to kiss each other when they woke up, it had become a gesture that, despite everything, they were still together. They clung to each other so as not to lose each other completely.
While William used to take a shower, Catherine would prepare breakfast for her children. No matter how shattered she was, she always got up to get the children ready.
—Good morning, sweetheart— the brunette went to Charlotte's room to wake her up and get her ready for school.
Since Victoria's death, there wasn't a single moment when the woman didn't look at the little girl and see something of her firstborn there, which made her happy because in a way it made her feel that Victoria was still there.
Like every morning, the five of them had breakfast together. And as complicated as their lives were at the time, being with their children made them happy. They could find refuge with each other.
William was in charge of taking the children to school, so when the four of them walked out the door. Kate turned to go back to bed, unable to find refuge with each other.
After dropping George, Charlotte and Louis off at their school, she went to the gym where she could release some of the pain inside her. Normally she stayed there all morning, but this time she decided to go home early.
Every morning, Catherine ordered flowers to take to her little girl's grave. It was a quiet time, where she talked to Victoria. It felt the same as when she was a baby and talked to her about everything and the child couldn't fix her. Although back then her daughter was alive.
She picked up the bouquet of flowers, which was in the dining room, and as she was about to go to the front door, she met her husband in front of it.
—Oh hi— said Catherine, a little surprised.
—Are you going to see her?— asked the man awkwardly, although he already knew the answer —Can I come with you?
—Of course— she gave him a small smile.
Normally she used to walk as it helped her to clear her mind. But this time they decided to go by car. The journey took less than five minutes, during which they spent it in complete silence.
When they arrived, the dean gave them a little wave of his hand, which they reciprocated with a small gesture.
It had been four months since her death, but whenever they saw her grave next to four empty graves, where Charles and Camilla and they were laid to rest, a lump formed in their throats.
Victoria's grave was full of flowers, which Catherine had laid over the past few weeks, so this time she decided to give them to her husband so that he could also contribute.
—Thank you— he murmured, bending down to place the bouquet next to the others.
—Hi Vic— Catherine took a seat and William followed.
The two talked about George, Charlotte and Louis and how much they missed their older sister. The woman often talked to her friends and also told him how their lives were going. Most of the time, though, they spent most of the time in silence.
After being there for almost an hour they decided it was time to leave.
—Bye sweetie, see you tomorrow.
—Bye Kika.
The couple left to go back home, but this time a little calmer. Talking to Victoria always made them feel like she was still with them somehow.
—Let me handle this— William announced as his wife went into the kitchen to prepare lunch.
The woman was used to cooking, since William had not yet arrived home at that hour. The truth was that the bereavement had not brought them together, at least not at first. Each processed Victoria's death very differently.
The prince hid all his grief and avoided talking about Victoria. The Duchess, on the other hand, couldn't stop wondering what Victoria would do at any given moment and spent the day looking at pictures of her.
Neither of them talked about how they felt, not because they didn't want to, they just didn't know how to without falling apart. They barely talked about anything anymore, which caused their hearts to break more, if that was possible.
Until one night, they knew they had to fix it. So after putting the kids to sleep, they locked themselves in their room and finally got to let out everything they had inside.
Although their relationship would never go back to the way it was before, at least they decided to work every day to keep all the love they felt for each other. Little by little their life was beginning to come together, although it would never be the same again.
For George, Charlotte and Louis it hadn't been easy either. Especially for the former, who had to start learning a lot of things he wasn't yet ready for. And he had the constant feeling that he was occupying a place that didn't belong to him. Seeing their mother in such pain let them know that the woman they knew would never come back.
They could no longer see Victoria, but she was still there, in the hearts of all the people who loved and loved her. As time went by, that pain lessened, only to be left with a smile every time they remembered her.
***
I have hesitated a lot to upload this chapter, but I think it was necessary to close the whole story. As some people have asked me, I'm thinking of making a second book about Victoria, but this time about her as a child. It will take me a few months though.
Thank you all for making it this far! 🤍
