As it did every day, the alarm sounded in the room at six o'clock, earning a loud groan from the teenage girls. That night they had stayed up all night at a party a classmate had organised in their dormitory.
—I want to die, we have maths for the first two hours— growled Maya as she went to the bathroom to wash her face.
—What if we go to the city?— asked Victoria, which made Maya look at her funny, but when she saw her friend's serious face, she was very confused.
—If you get caught you'll be grounded for life and go back to Windsor— the blonde reminded her, but she didn't seem to mind as she shrugged.
—I'm so sick of not being able to do normal things because of my family. I just want to walk down the street like a teenager with her best friend— she confessed with tears in her eyes, and Maya couldn't say no to the idea.
They took a walk through the centre while they talked, some people stared at them but it was because of the confusion of seeing two teenagers in the street on a school day. When they went to get a coffee in a local shop, a journalist recognised her and started taking pictures of her.
—Vic, that man recognised us— whispered Maya, causing the princess to look directly in his direction and she could see that he was taking pictures of them.
Seeing the man's action, many people began to recognise her and started to take pictures of her. They tried to walk faster in the hope of losing them in the crowd, but the further she walked the more people seemed to recognise her.
—Run— Victoria grabbed her best friend's hand and the two of them ended up in a small park, where they hid behind some bushes, trying to catch their breath.
The brunette started to cry, she had always wasted the work of the security guards, but when she saw them appear in the car thanks to her tracking device, she felt a great relief.
They went back to the boarding school and acted as if nothing had happened. Victoria was too afraid to turn on her phone so when classes were over she decided to stay in the library reading a book.
—Vic, you have to answer your parents— announced Maya when she saw her appear through the door of her room —They wrote to me asking about you, they're worried.
The princess sighed and lay down on the bed, letting her tears fall. The blonde took a seat on the edge of the bed to comfort her friend.
—My parents are going to kill me— she sobbed —I promised them I wouldn't give them any trouble.
—Hey Vic, it's okay. You just wanted to have fun and know how it feels, you can't blame yourself for it— she gave her a hug —Talk to them and explain it to them, I'm sure they'll understand.
The brunette nodded, not very convinced, and took her iPhone from the small pocket inside her bag and turned it on. A bunch of messages from her family started to arrive. In the first few messages you could tell they were angry but the longer it went on you could tell they were very concerned.
She took several deep breaths before calling her mother, who she assumed would be hysterical at this point.
—Victoria, thank goodness you're answering— the opposite of what the teenager thought, the woman was relieved. Although she knew she was fine since they had been in contact with the security guards the whole time.
-I'm sorry mum- her tears escaped her eyes and rolled down her face —I just wanted to know how feels.
Although Catherine couldn't understand her daughter 100%, she knew what the feeling of lack of freedom was and she could tell how difficult it was. She was grateful that she had been able to have a normal childhood and although she tried to make her children's childhood as normal as possible, sometimes it was impossible, which made her feel very bad. During all the years she had been with William, she had talked to him about her desires for freedom, so she could imagine that they were the same as Victoria's. She was grateful that she had been able to have a normal childhood.
—I need you to understand that what you did was wrong. You can't skip school, let alone go into town without security— Catherine said as calmly as possible.
Victoria thought they were going to have a big fight, but knowing that her mother understood made her feel good. After that they said their goodbyes and then came the part she dreaded the most; talking to her father.
—What were you thinking?— the man asked, much more upset than his wife, which made the brunette shudder. —Anything could have happened to you— he said angrily, but at the same time, his concern was evident.
The teenager apologised but was not spared her father's long lecture on the dangers of going out alone. He also promised to try to stop the photos being published, but that it would be very difficult.
Her father's words made her heart start pounding, she knew that many of the photos had probably already been published, so she decided to look up her name on her laptop. Hundreds of headlines instantly appeared: "Troubled princess: Victoria escapes without security", " Rebellious princess caught at Windsor with friend", "Victoria is a burden on royal family".
She decided to close the laptop as she had had enough. She got out of bed and went to the window. Crossing her arms as she looked out at the city lights from afar. The sense of freedom he had felt hours before seemed like a distant and distant memory, pushed aside under the weight of expectations and judgments.
She went to sleep with the thought that maybe they were right and she wasn't born for royalty as it was a disappointment. Every time he looked in the mirror, his face was cold and sophisticated, emotionless, as if she had learned to block it all out. But behind her eyes, there was a cry for help that no one heard.
