Jack slowly rose up again, leaving me on the floor. I rubbed my wrists. They were already pretty red and would surely turn blue and purple later. This wasn't the time to worry about my wrists though. Jack picked up his scalpel, that he previously dropped as I tackled him and turned towards Alex again. He was still on the floor, holding his hand to the wounds on his stomach. The wounds weren't that huge but Alex definitely needed some medical care soon to stop the bleeding and make sure his organs didn't get damaged too much. However, Jack didn't look like he was about to patch up those wounds. He grabbed his scalpel tightly and kneeled down next to Alex, who tried to shuffle away from Jack but only contorted his face in pain and dropped back onto the ground weakly.

"I told you what would happen if you did something to piss me off." Jack turned his head to look at me again. "And yet, you still did it. You used a weak moment against me and escaped." He turned away from me to look at Alex. Somehow, I felt like there was more than anger in his voice. He sounded almost disappointed or maybe even... sad? I quietly got up and walked over to Jack. He had his back to me and I hesitated for a moment. Should I just attack him? Tackle him? Stab him again? No, that wouldn't do. I kneeled down behind him and lightly grabbed the fabric of his hoodie.

"Jack." I said his name quietly. Luckily, he didn't immediately push me away. I didn't even know what to say to him. I felt like I had to say something. Frustrated, I grabbed the fabric of his hoodie a bit tighter and hung my head. Jack wasn't acting like he usually did. His actions just didn't make sense. He was always quietly sneaking up on victims, took them out quickly and collected some kidneys. He didn't stab them in some random area in their stomach like he just did with Alex. That didn't even make any sense with a scalpel. A scalpel was for precise cutting. And he was so emotional. It just didn't fit him. He was a smart guy. He knew better than to cause such chaos during an attack. "Please, listen to me." I pleaded with a weak voice. I didn't know why I felt like I had to talk to him. Maybe I should've just ran outside, grab a phone, call the police. Literally anything else. But somehow I felt like this would maybe calm him down.

"What...?" Suddenly, Alex spoke. His voice was weak and he stared at me in shock. "Don't talk to him! He's a monster! Get away from him! Get out and get help!" His panicked voice got louder as he yelled orders at me. Apparently, it also snapped Jack back into his rage as he once again tightened his grip on his scalpel and lifted it up again, aiming at Alex below him. I didn't even have any time to think about what to do before I threw myself forward and past Jack to land between Alex and the scalpel just before Jack could move his arm all the way down. I felt the sharp blade of the scalpel plunge into my shoulder as I shielded Alex with my own body. The pain seemed unbearable for a moment. My muscles tensed and I bit down hard on my lip to avoid a scream, yet still let out a small yelp as I buried my face in Alex' chest below me. "No!" He yelled as his arms wrapped around me. I felt the blade getting pulled out of me again and flinched. Hearing the metal of the scalpel drop and hit the floor, I slowly forced myself to straighten up and turn towards Jack.

He just kneeled there, staring in my direction, not moving a muscle. Was he shocked about accidentally hitting me instead of Alex? I heard Alex' panicked voice but I didn't really listen to what he said. I only stared back at Jack trying to figure out what he was thinking about. He dropped his scalpel. He didn't try to attack again. He just looked at me with his empty, black eyes. I felt Alex sit up and grab my shoulders but my whole attention was on Jack, watching him, waiting for him to move in any way. But he was like frozen in place.

Only when a high pitched scream rung around the room, all our heads snapped into the direction of the source to see Alex' mom standing in the doorframe. Her eyes were open wide in shock and she held her head in her hands as she looked between all of us. I looked back at her until I saw Jack move in my peripheral vision. Turning my head towards him again, I only saw him scramble to his feet and sprint outside, even leaving his scalpel on the floor. Alex' mom rushed over to us, holding her son by the shoulders and looking at his blood soaked shirt in horror. Her hands were clearly trembling as she looked him up and down. "Oh god, what happened to you? Who was that? Did he do this to you?" She started blurting out questions before turning to me. "(Y/N), can you get up? Can you get a phone? We need to call an ambulance. The police. We need help." She rambled on in panic. Balling my hands into fists I looked at her before shifting my gaze over Alex and his wounds and eventually settling my gaze on the scalpel Jack left on the floor. "(Y/N), did you hear me? Are you okay?" I heard her. But my heart was pumping so rapidly. My thoughts were racing.

And before I knew it, I grabbed the scalpel from the floor and took off.
