The empress was very perplexed about his current feelings, but he was certain that he and the emperor would never be romantically involved again. The emperor had done more than enough damage to him, and even if the emperor's behavior did end up being linked to someone else, he would still be unwilling to be in a relationship with the emperor.

Leaving the complex feelings behind the empress dressed for the morning greeting. It was said that a handmaid of the emperor had gotten pregnant but for some reason had a miscarriage. The maid had fallen very ill but didn't dare to speak of her grievances to the empress as she was afraid of implicating herself even deeper in this scheme. But the empress now had taken many shadow guards from her family and placed them in the harem, which meant she had eyes everywhere. She knew exactly who the schemer was, but since this was common in the harem and the culprit was of high nobility he couldn't really do anything to them, as to keep the balance within the harem.

Today again the empress was simply dressed. He had one a white and yellow runqun, embroidered with many flowers that varied in color. In his hand was a light yellow fan that was cut in the shape of a butterfly. Part of his hair was tied up in a mid bun, while the rest of his hair was dropped loosely on his back. In his hair were two phoenix hairpins and four butterfly ones which were adorned with pearls and diamonds. His eyebrows were trimmed neatly and rouge was applied on both his lips, and cheeks. As he walked in, the concubines couldn't help but admire the empress's beauty, but hearing the empress's slight cough they all came back to reality and bowed in greeting.

"This lowly concubine greets the empress!" The concubines greeted in unison as they bowed.

"You may rise," The empress said lightly as he took his seat. As instructed all the concubines rose and sat in their perspective seats.

"How's jiejie lately?" Hereditary Consort Cuifen asked gently, her smile broad. All the other concubines who were about to speak to the empress shut their mouths in tacit understanding. The emperor had visited Hereditary Consort Cuifen's place three nights in a row and had even rewarded her, so currently, she was in the limelight.

"I'm faring very well, but this empress heard some news and became somewhat displeased lately," The empress responded softly as she reclined back on her seat lazily. Even though she spoke softly and her actions were light, the concubines felt that the atmosphere had changed.

"May this lowly concubine have the honor of listening to the empress's story?" Hereditary Consort Cuifen asked in obeisance as she got up and gave a curtsy.

"Well, It seems that the harem is becoming more and more unruly, as someone had the audacity to scheme right under my nose." The empress responded coldly making Hereditary Consort Cuifen's smile falter. She felt the piercing eyes of the empress and couldn't help but break out into a cold sweat, but she knew she had to hide her nervousness or she would get caught. 

The empress actually didn't care about the scheming that much, but at this moment only two people in the harem had children and one was pregnant. One of which was her best friend, no matter how you look at it, it did seem suspicious. So having kids in the harem currently was a must. She also didn't care for this, but as an empress, he was the mother of the nation and was an example for all women. Why should his name go down in history as a jealous and evil empress because of scheming concubines? So he needed to warn them. They could start scheming once the harem had more children, but right now was not the time.

"Somebody was actually poisoned?" Hereditary Consort Xuilan asked, with a shocked face. It wasn't her so of course she would try to add fuel to the fire, as long as it benefitted her.

"Yes, and I am here to warn everyone here today to stop their scheming because in the end I am the one that is blamed and have to clean it up." The empress said coldly as his eyes swept at the concubines.

"This lowly concubine didn't even know about this, and this lowly concubine is also sure that none of my other sisters knew of this also, could this possibly be a malicious rumor?" Hereditary Consort Huifen commented softly as she looked at the ground.

"Well, why don't we let the victim speak for herself? Li Dani tells the handmaid to come in," The empress instructed as he leisurely sipped his tea. Immediately after his instructions were given, Hereditary Consort Cuifen's face visibly contorted. When the maid walked in, she barely could hold her smile. 

The maid that walked in looked about twenty years old, but her face resembled a young beauty that was in her late teens. If she said she was sixteen, no one would question her. Her body was well-proportioned, and her dark hair shined as it cascaded on her back. Her eyes were round and big, her lips plum and red, and her eyebrows straight. Her skin was also clear. All in all, she would be considered a beauty. It was not a surprise as to why the emperor chose her.

"This lowly slave greets the empress, may the empress live for a thousand years and ten thousand more!" The maid greeted him as she kneeled.

"You may rise, Huahua give her a seat. The lady has just had a miscarriage she can't stand for too long." The empress instructed his maid.

"Thank you your majesty for your benevolence!" The maid thanked her as she sat down on the seat prepared for her.

"Okay, now tell this empress what happened that caused your miscarriage." The empress asked as he put his teacup down and straightened his back. His words obviously had an effect on Hereditary Consort Huifen as her hands started trembling lightly.
